One of you help me on 8. I'm thinking eight year cycles are counted now. The Shmittah year is the seventh of each cycle. The Yovel (Jubilee) occurs at the end of seven cycles of Shmittah years, that is, the 50th year.
The last Shmitta year was 5761 (2000-2001). I do not know when the next Yovel will occur.
There are special observances regarding the fruits and harvests of Israel that must be done during the Shmittah.
