...Kerry adviser Michael McCurry now says Lockhart recently told Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry's campaign manager, about the conversation. McCurry says Cahill then told Kerry.
...But a cynical person would ask precisely what Lockhart knew about the story Mapes was reporting--and would demand to know who was telling what to whom when Lockhart and Burkett spoke. Also: As questions swirled about Burkett, who was publicly identified as a possible source of the memos on Sept. 12, why didn't Kerry's campaign quickly reveal its contact with Burkett to pre-empt any suggestion of collusion?
But Lockhart isn't the only Kerry ally who spoke with Burkett before CBS aired its bogus story. Former Sen. Max Cleland (D-Ga.) has said he talked last month with Burkett, who claimed to have information about Bush that would offset criticism of Kerry's service record. Cleland has said he gave Burkett's name and number to the Kerry campaign's research department.
Burkett has said he lied to CBS. Anchorman Dan Rather has apologized for airing the story. Time now for the Kerry campaign and CBS to come clean about all communiques between them about this story and these phony documents. Kerry has denounced what he and others say are baseless lies from swift boat veterans about his service record. It will be heartening to hear his reassurance that he has inspected his own campaign and found it innocent of any involvement in CBS' tawdry fiasco.

You mean the SNOWball, right? Downhill, scooping up every skiier in its path.
DAN RATHER LIED TO US
He said he acted on bad information.
When President Bush did the re:WMD they said he 'lied' to the people... so by the same standard TED BAXTER, I mean DAN RATHER IS A LIAR
Before this CBS story broke I distinctly remember hearing Susan Estrich on Fox News make the statement that "something big was going to be coming soon" concerning President Bush. She knew, I believe.
Matter of fact, I'm gonna call Max Cleeland up right now and ask him about it ...
I'm from Maryland. WBAL radio in Baltimore just reported on it's hourly news that a poll of 600 likely voters in the state shows a tied race here...48% to 48%. Amazing. Our Governor Ehrlich, who I support strongly, said President Bush shouldn't bother visiting here because it's such a strongly Dem state.. I wonder if he feels that way now.
If Mary Mapes was doing a story on 'the documents' and asked Lockhart to call Burkett (who is the one that had the documents), tell me how Lockhart can claim that he and Burkett didn't discuss the documents? If that's true, what the heck did Burkett and Lockhart discuss, fall fashions? Why has no one posed that question to Lockhart?
I was dumbfounded by Lockhart's reply last night that anyone could ask Burkette about the call and he'd verify what Lockart said.
Ask a known liar to confirm the lie by another confirmed liar?
Are they completely unhinged?
Lockhart claims they talked about a more effective response to the Swift Boat Vets. Lockhart says he just listened. That settles it I guess.
I am sure that Susan Estrich knew, she even mentioned Bush's Guard service, among a few other things like alchoholism, probably from the Kitty Kelley book. Estrich is now trying to cover herself by saying, nothing to see here, let's just all move along. She wrote an article on these threats!
While the Tribune is at it, the should do an investigative piece on the coordination of Paul Krugman at the NY Times and the Kerry campaign. Krugman's articles appear to be nothing more than Kerry campaign talking points.
What did she know? Fox should go after her or Fox will look bad too.
It certainly is perplexing on many levels, such as:
1. Why Joe Lockhart and not Cahill? Was Lockhart actually running the campaign before he officially came on?
2. Was this phone call a precondition for Mapes getting the documents?
3. Did Lockhart, even tacitly, give Burkett a green light to release the docs to CBS?
4. What other contacts took place between CBS and the Dems which they are not telling us about?
"Expect more of this. The ball is rolling."
I should hope so. Remember the scene in "Master and Commander" where they had to cut loose the guy who'd gone overboard when the mast broke off? Yeah, that guy would be Dan, and if the ship of Old Media doesn't cut him loose he'll take the whole bunch down with him. They will hate like hell doing it and there'll be lots of hard feelings, but their survival depends on ditching Dan.
Hey foo... Want to do a little research....look over here?

Wouldn't it be a gem if it's true!!!!
Despite this, The Tribune is a leftist rag.
But I thought McAwful was accusing Rove of planting the documents. Instead the Kerry team knew about the documents from the beginning. G-o-l-l-l-y-y.
If Burkett provided the documents on the condition of a conversation with the Kerry camp - then the Kerry camp DID provide them. No difference to giving the guy a ride to the studio and pushing the elevator button
Is this a "real" story or an op-ed?
With a campaign this disorganized, I can only imagine the disorganization of a Kerry presidency. It would be pure chaos.
