BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier was killed when a roadside bomb hit a patrol near the town of Tikrit.

"One Task Force Danger Soldier was killed when anti-Iraqi forces (US military terminology for insurgents) attacked a combat patrol using an improvised explosive device near Tikrit at about 9:15 am (0515 GMT)," a US military statement said Wednesday.

"No other Soldiers were wounded in the attack," it added.

Iraqi police reported earlier that an Iraqi civilian was killed and two wounded in a similar attack near Tikrit Wednesday, but it was not immediately possible to verify whether it was in the same explosion.

According to Pentagon figures, the latest death brings to 1,036 the number of US troops killed in Iraq (news - web sites) since the March 2003 invasion.
