WASHINGTON (AFP) - The CBS television network was forced onto the defensive again as fresh revelations emerged concerning a critical report it broadcast on President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s National Guard service in the 1970s.The network said the producer of the report, Mary Mapes, put a source for the CBS story in touch with a senior aide to the presidential campaign of Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) before its broadcast.
CBS News said Tuesday that White House communications director Dan Bartlett had accused it of coordinating a political attack against Bush with the Kerry campaign.
Kerry campaign aide Joe Lockhart said Mapes put him in touch with Bill Burkett -- a key source used by CBS in its report which cast doubts on Bush's National Guard service -- but that they did not discuss documents Burkett gave CBS.
The documents, which CBS has said it can now not authenticate, were allegedly written by Bush's commanding officer in the Texas National Guard in the 1970s. They suggested political pressure was being exerted to "sugar coat" the future president's service record.
"She (Mapes) gave me his (Burkett's) number ... he gave me some advice on how to respond to the swift boat smears against John Kerry," Lockhart said, refering to attacks on Kerry's own military record, in a report aired by CBS Tuesday.
Lockhart said he and Burkett did not discuss the documents which have put CBS on the defensive over its news gathering amid claims they were faked.
"The Kerry campaign had nothing to do with these documents. There's nothing to this story," Lockhart said.
"It is obviously against CBS news standards to be associated with any political agenda. As to what actually happened here, it is one of many issues the independent review will be examining," CBS News said in a statement.
I did not have intimate verbal relations with that man, uh, uh, Bill Burkett."
In answer to your next anticipated question, well, that depends upon what the meaning of the word doc-u-ment is. From my White House experience, the Beltway defines doc-u-ment as duck-u-mean.
Baghdad Bug-Eyed Joe.
WHO is the 'unimpeachable source'??
BTTT
The parrot is not dead I tell you, he's just sleeping.
There you go! Straight from the man who knows. The Kerry campaign must be clean since old Joe says so?
What amazes me about all of this entangled mess, is the silence of the Federal Elections Committee and the Federal Bureau of Investigation? Are they not concerned that fraudulent activities are being used to affect the outcome of a United States presidential election?
It's a bit difficult to distinguish Lockhart Smurf from Daschle Smurf. I think Daschle Smurf is only 2½ apples tall and has two tears on his cheeks as opposed to three.
If all else fails, dial 1-800-CRY-BABY and ask for DNC Smurf.
If one goes down, they will take the others with them. There has been collusion with the DNC for more than 30 years.
I've got a few suggestions for Lockhart and the Kerry campaign. So how about you give me a call Joe, and let's discuss, mK?
Yup. This is the modus operandi for the Lamestreamers. They run a biased, morally compromised news organization, but when they see "their boy" has serious problems and is going to fail, they suddenly turn on him to prove that they are "not always kerrying water" for the liberals.
By November 2nd, those of us who are Kerry's biggest foes are going to be feeling sorry for him....well, almost.
. . . to distinguish Lockhart Smurf from Daschle Smurf . . .
1: Check the shoes.
2: Check the dog (e.g., is it no longer beaten?, etc.)
3: Fax results to unlikely voters.
Just got done listening to Michael Savage on my way home from work. He had Pat Buchanan on saying why the heck isn't the US attorney investigating or charging anyone with forging military documents - a felony.
Pat and Mike do not a sensible team make.
Trust me.
Didn't stop CBS radio news today. At noon CDT, the CBS news segment on radio said the Bush appeared before the UN today and that there was NO applause during his speech. Stony silence or some such term was used, I think. The reporter's version seemed designed to leave the impression with listeners that the whole audience strongly disapproved of Bush's speech.
What CBS didn't point out was that standard practice at the UN is no applause during speeches. I gather that the delegates were reminded of that before Bush's speech. Unbiased objective reporting from CBS? Not on your life!
Fortunately Brit Hume pointed the UN no applause rule during his TV program tonight.
Rove's obviously programmed well-meaning liberals to become Republican operatives using mind control. The timing is very suspicious.
