United Nations, NY, Sep. 21 (UPI) -- President Bush suggested the United Nations establish a "Democracy Fund" to help developing countries in a speech to the world body Tuesday.
"Because I believe the advance of liberty is the path to both a safer and better world, today I propose establishing a democracy fund within the United Nations," he told the U.N. General Assembly at their opening session in New York.
"This is a great calling for this great organization," he said, adding that the United States would give the first contribution to the fund.

NO Not the UN. They will lose it. Cash for oil program.
He means well, but it's a bad idea.
Is he high? Establishing a "fund" under UN control is like letting Marion Barry watch your crack for you.
I *hate* the thought that even a small amount of my taxes might go to the UN.
They should get less, not more.
sick
This is just another version of the 'World Tax' proposed
by Chirac. Get your wallet out!
Fund this program with graft and corruption money from Koffi's personal Swiss account.
Instead of just a fund, he should advocate a United Democratic Nations--a more exclusive club than the UN. Then, he should announce that most of the US's diplomatic focus (and funding) will focus on the UDN rather than the UN. If you want the benefits of membership, you have to liberate your people.
The reason it is easy to hate the UN is that it is completely unexclusive. Any two-bit thug or bloody mass murder who manages to spill enough rival blood gets a membership, a vote, and access to UN$.
Ugh.
I'm getting sick of do-gooder, Blue-blood Bushes giving away my money- and expanding government, also.
Bush is a Liberal, who bought many off with tax cuts while he tries to 'heal' the world.
He is the anti-Reagan. He has disfigured the Conservative movement that Newt handed him.
The UN speech was more slop for the Liberal trough. How so-called conservative people can love this act is really baffling to me.
BTW: He's going on the Dr. Phil show! So much for upholding the dignity of the office pledge. Defend that! I'm in a fighting mood tonight.
