In an interview Monday evening, a repentant Rather conceded it had been a mistake to broadcast the documents. But even though he could not vouch for their authenticity, he said he still did not believe that they were fakes.
"Do I think they're forged? No," Rather said.
"But it's not good enough to use the documents on the air if we can't vouch for them, and we can't vouch for them."
What kind of reporter would I be if I put something on the air in which I believed, and as soon as it's attacked and under pressure, you run, you fold, you fade, you side-wind? That's not the kind of person I am, and it's not the kind of reporter I am."

Rather is a certified nut. Just like every liberal. Just like John Kerry. This is actually very funny. I listened to Larua Ingram today and I laughed and laughed and laughed.
"Do I think they're forged? No," Rather said.
CBS must take him at his word, then, and never trust his judgment or discernment or common sense again. CBS management, it's time to let him go.
By jove, I do believe you're on to something there. Rather (no pun intended) quickly, my imagination fills the wall of his office with pictures. I'm seeing faces from the Senate, the House of Representatives, and several major newspapers.....no end of candidates. Is it any wonder he sailed over the edge?
"When we talked to people in his home community in Texas," Rather said, "even those people that didn't like him said he's a truth-teller."
But Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell, the Boston Globe, Newsweek, etc. all have said that Burkett is *not* a reliable source, and has not told the truth. There is a reason why Burkett gave the documents to CBS, and not another media outlet -- because Dan Rather was the only media guy who didn't think Burkett was a lunatic!
serious dementia
You said it so well!!
Oh man, that was pathetic. The only good part of it is the fact that Dan is clearly miserable right now.

"IT is far more important to know what when on for the MISSING 6 months of GW's military career than it is know who forged some silly documents."
Can Kool-aid cause permanent mental damage?
What do you mean by, "Has he gone psycotic?"
He has never been sane.
Dan is obviously thinking he could outlast this. He thought the charges of forgery would just blow over, so he stood his ground. Never admit defeat, mentality. And he is still trying.
He continues to underestimate how much this hurts his credibility.
Where was Dan Rather in 1971 when Kerry testified????I was surprised when I saw pics of Kerry and Ted Kennedy together in 1971-guess I forgot about their connection then.
Has Dan been waiting until now to Help Kerry or was he reporting on him in 1971 too??? I always wondered how Kerry got away with his testimony without being sent to prison for treason-Teddy protected him? and Dan moved the press?
They are going to have to put him out to pasture. He's nuts.
Thank God for bugmenot.com. I didn't have to go thru the annoying registration process to read this article.
As truthful as Barnes?
