At the suggestion of a CBS News producer, a top adviser to John Kerry talked to the man at the center of the National Guard "memogate" imbroglio before the disputed documents were revealed, FOX News has confirmed.
Joe Lockhart (search) said he got a call from CBS the Saturday before the Sept. 8 broadcast which launched the network into a firestorm of controversy.
The CBS representative alerted Lockhart that a man in Texas, Bill Burkett (search), was interested in helping the Kerry-Edwards campaign. Lockhart then called Burkett, a former Texas Army National Guard official who CBS says provided the doubtful documents. ...
"They came to me at the last minute and expected me to be the one to authenticate them," Bartlett told FOX News. "These are documents that came from a dead man's file, so I had to accept from a news organization that they were authentic."
Bartlett said Bush asked him to explain what happened when the president was in the Guard and that's what has been done for every campaign, because every time Bush is on the ballot, questions about his service surface.
"I was stunned when I started getting calls Friday and Saturday that I sealed the deal for them, that I made it credible to put the documents forward when really I had to call them on Tuesday evening [the night before the documents were aired] and they said they wouldn't give it to us until the next day," Bartlett added. "It is breathtaking to think that after all this, they are now pointing to my interview as saying that I'm the person authenticating the documents when I was given them at the last minute."

Cool!!!
And to think Terry "the Liar" Maculiff blamed it all on Karl Rove. The Flip Flop campaign is full of FRAUD and LIARS.
Someone at Lucianne posted the following:
"To everyone who wanted to know how the Clintons were going to sabotage the Kerry campaign--TA DAA!"
hmmm...the second half of the story starting to grow legs ping!
Another thing to note is that "Texans for Truth" came out with an ad against Bush's guard service the next morning after CBS aired that show. "Texas for Truth" organized AFTER the democratic convention and got their 527 status on Aug. 31, just in time to get an ad together. That was fast moving considering the fact they were non-existent a month before.
CBS blames White House for not warning them the docs were fake.
By gosh, I told you this was Bush's fault!
Here's what looks like what is happening.
CBS is turning Burkett into the fall guy for Lockhart and the DNC.
it's all going to come out and they are in deep doo doo.
Unfrickinbelieveable!!!
This could end up being another Watergate. We have forged government docs, contact between CBS and the Kerry campaign, contact between Burkett and the Kerry campaign, and Kerry hyping the 60 minutes piece weeks before it was to be aired.
If Kerry is worried about being caught in the middle of everything, I wonder if he will take a dive as far as the election is concerned. If Kerry doesn't win the election this will all just go away, but if he wins he could be in for a VERY bad time.
I smell Hillary and Bubba. Kerry talked to Bubba for a long time before this came out. Bubba just loves to put forth his "legal opinions". Deny, deny, deny. If it blows up, grab a Black's Law Dictionary and look up the word "Conspiracy" and do a "flip" on it. It's a little after the word concubine in the dictionary.
This just keeps getting better and better.
Not to mention that coordinated DNC ad campaign, "Fortunate Son." The ads only ran for a very short time and then they pulled them but clearly it was coordinated because it takes time to at least MAKE the ads...not looking good for the Kerry campaign, the DNC and CBS.
The butler did it.
DNC dumped the documents to Burkett who was anxious to pass them off Rather.
Karl Rove is just too smart for the Democrats.
This will leave the Clinton Gang in charge.
This is all part of the Coup over there, and the bell is tolling for Kennedy hegemony within the Democrat power structure.
"Bartlett said Bush asked him to explain what happened when the president was in the Guard..."
Gosh, I doubt this. Maybe "Bush" should be "Lockhart"?
