The DNC could not air the memos themselves without fear of backlash. Since they had the documents, they couldn't legally coordinate with a 527, like Move On.org. Going to the networks was a sanitary way to get the smear out without the sticky problem of the DNC having their fingerprints on them. Journalists can protect their sources.

But, CBS got sloppy and posted the .pdf files. If they had simply run with the story, they would have never been found out. The WH and the RNC would not raise the question since it would have only led to a broader story than the orginal broadcast. The PajamaHademe would not have had the credentials to challenge CBS to see the originals.

Thanks to someone at CBS for being too smart by half and posting those docs to add "gravitas" to their story.

Could that someone be a Freeper?

CBS had to post them because the alleged memos had become of over-riding public interest since they were the very basis for the news report. There were no reasonable grounds on which copies could have been withheld. Other news mediums would have demanded copies. Finally, there was more than a little hubris by CBS. The result was that the forged memos were posted by CBS.

I agree I think the posting was a mistake, the docs were never supposed to be circulated.

As a clue -- Today you had CBS TV more or less being reported on by the CBS web site.

Technology ate Dan's lunch ;^}
