Tony Coelho admitted on Hardball tonight that the DNC had the memos before CBS but that they didn't use them because they realized that the documents were probably fake.
'He did not come to us, we went to him and asked for the documents.'
Who told CBS/DNC that Burkett had the documents?

I remember reading that he went to the DNC. I remember that the DNC had documents they did not know what to do with and they laid around for awhile until they finally decided to send to CBS to do with as they pleased.
This was in one of those reports when this all came up.
If they had them, possibly they were then forged by Kerry staff and sent on to CBS.
Yeah, and the DNC didn't waive CBS off because they thought, ok, we'll do this without fingerprints. We'll say we won't use them bec. they're fake (maybe the DNC created the docs in the first place), then we can do positive denial, but we'll back-channel them to Rather and he'll issue them for us.

And right after the story broke Terry McAwful said the dnc had nothing to do with the documents and blamed them on Carl Rove. I thought that response to be very strange.

Burkett contacted Cleland and was referred to DNC. Went through lots of kids trying to get through.
DNC had documents they did not know what to do with - were just laying around - until they finally decided to send on to CBS for their use if they wanted them. (This could be where the forgery took place.)
Could these forged documents have been taken to Texas by Cleland on his 8-25 march to the Bush ranch. A slight side trip to meet with Burkett and give the documents.
Burkett then contacts CBS with documents, Barnes is recruited, documents faxed by Mapes from Kinkos and CBS reviews them. All this time Fortunate Son is being made.
Mapes arranges conversation with Lockhart for Burkett (according to their agreement) a few days before 9-8. Probably when he tries to make a deal for a position for his part in the scam.
9-8 Rather airs the piece.

Xxxactly. They would have gotten big credibility points if they had called them what they were. Koppel would have had a week of triumphal celebration about the Dems commitment to journalistic integtity.

He's saying that Coehlo was talking about the GORE campaign, not the Kerry campaign.

This story is gruesome enough for the Dems without embellishing it. After all, we're NOT Dems.
I'd pull it for the time being......
Try this scenario:
Burkett claims he has proof that Bush had problems with his TANG record. [Burkett had been pushing this lie for years, but needs proof]. Calls Cleland to tell him he has proof (forged papers that he did or had done). Cleland meets with or speaks to Burkett. Cleland Takes docs back with him to Kerry camp and DNC.
Kerry/DNC not sure if real or fake. Barnes separately says Bush had problems with his TANG record. Barnes tips off Mary Mapes or Rather about what the DNC/Kerry has.
Mapes calls to check on the story and Barnes becomes a "source". Although Kerry/DNC are unsure, Barnes is independently verifing the documents (as to the tone of previous allegations not the veracity of the docs themselves). Barnes tells them Burkett can also verify the docs. Mapes contacts Lockhart and informs him Burkett wants to chat. Lockhart and Burkett chat.
CBS duplicitous in the relationship by wanting the story to be true. They discounted family and others not only because of party affiliation but because Barnes and Burkett supposedly verified the documents. Good enough for them. Back that up with Cleland's words, then CBS figures its true.
Bloggers prove them wrong and CBS wants to back track. DNC/Kerry continue to pressure CBS to stick with story since they're running the Operation Fortunate Son.
The Dam breaks and DNC can no longer control the media cycle. CBS is left to hang and spin in the breeze. Now Burkett will be forced under the bus.

Check it out again, I dont think that is what he said. I believe he said that Burkett came to the DNC back in 2000 with someting similar. I dont think he ever said documents. The point was that the DNC/Gore campaign wasnt stupid enough to do anything with the information that Burkett gave them. Could be / Might be / but I think youve overstated it.
