Here's another take on your basic stance on this issue:

Yours is like saying that Islamic terrorists are exclusively to blame for terrorist acts, but the clerics who create the atmosphere advocating and promoting their actions is faultless.

There are reasons for the violence in Chechnya, and those reasons lie at the very core of the brutality we witnessed. Those reasons must be addressed so that other Beslans can be stopped.

You may be able to kill all the terrorists, but if you allow the reason which gave them life and purpose to exist, you've done nothing.

I guess when a few tanks blow off the roof of a building where a 1000 hostages are being held...

"Show me Russia's culpability in creating the situation"

You haven't followed the war in Chechnya very closely these past ten years, have you?

Russia has killed 25% of the population of that nation, another 25% has been displaced.

"I've a friend who was a hostage at Dubrovka two years ago, and we've gone round and round on "blame"."

So, what you're saying here is that the only person that we know who was actually inside that theater blames the Russians for the deaths?

Clerics who forment terror are equally responsible. I'm sure the Chechnians have reasons to murder non-combatants, there's a lot of that going around.

You know perfectly well I was referring to the hostage situation. It's ok with me if you give the terrorists a pass, but save the bandwidth of a response, these games get boring fast.

I've read figures that cite as many as 40,000 children killed by the Russian mercenaries in Chechnya over the past ten years.

I'm a guy who lives by the old "trust, but verify" motto, and once I started digging into this thing, my head started to spin.

There's just so much...

Pretty much. Ms. Gubareva's take on the Beslan massacre:

Pro Osetiyu pogovorim v drugoy raz, a luchshe voobshche ne budem sporit', potomu chto possorimsya. Moe mnenie traditsionno ne sovpadaet s tvoim. Ne v chechentsakh problema! Nel'zya prichislyat' vsyu natsiyu k terroristam v ugodu Putinu. Terrorizm - ponyatie internatsional'noe.

"Let's talk about Ossetia another time, in general it's better that we don't argue, because we'll just get into a fight. My opinion traditionally doesn't coincide with yours, anyway. The problem is not the Chechnyans! You can't count a whole nation as terrorists to Putin's benefit. Terrorism - it's an international understanding."

In an interview about her ordeal (from a Karaganda, Kazakhsan, website here, my translation here):

(Interviewer):...the Russian bride of Baraev. Have you talked to this girl?

Gubareva: Yes. But I but know her only from the internet. I ran across her letter on the site dedicated to "Northeast". And the girl's letter was written with such sharp pain, that her pain joined with mine. The loss of my loved ones was thoughtless. The death was only for someone's political ambitions... I should, probably, confess that have have no pity for Chechyans, but I can't exactly say that their deaths were thoughtless. I looked at them: young, handsome fellows and girls. They conducted themselves properly with us, didn't try to offend. They weren't rude or rough or insulting. And I think that in principal they might have had completely different lives. Obviously everyone is someone's child, someone's brother or sister. Whether he was bad or good, for someone his life is important and dear.

I wasn't there, nothing similar has ever happened to me, thank God. Her opinion is interesting, and she's assembled trunk-loads of documents to support it, but I'm not one to let facts get in the way of my own beliefs ;-)

Reminds me of the Jersey girls at the 911 Commission hearings who wanted Bush's head on a platter. Sounds a little bit like Stockholm syndrome. Not exactly but you get my drift.

Isn't it interesting that we try any means to discredit anyone who actually challenges our ideological status quo?

What if she's simply telling the truth about what she experienced, and how she feels about it?

Sometimes, the simplest answers are the right answers.

I no more doubt the sincerity of her feelings anymore than those Jersey girls.

I called no one a liar. I question her perception not her sincerity.

Are you saying that the hostage situation had nothing to do with the war in Chechnya?

No. Like the Empire, the sun never sets on Islamic terror. Ping me when the Chechnians (sp?) have spent a year or two attacking military targets, and left civilians and airliners alone, thus divorcing themselves from their jihadist allies. I'll be glad to consider their complaints. Till then, they're our enemies allies.

Hopefully Israel can teach Russia to handle these situations, especially airline security, more effectively.
