Kerry not the first politician to botch Packers legend

WASHINGTON (AP) Note to presidential candidates: When in Wisconsin make sure you get your legendary sports figures' names correct.

Democratic nominee John Kerry has gotten some grief, in Wisconsin and nationally, for referring to Lambeau Field as ``Lambert Field'' during a campaign appearance.

Vice President Dick Cheney was quoted as saying, ``The next thing is he'll be convinced Vince Lombardi is a foreign leader.''

President Bush offered Kerry some advice during an appearance in Wisconsin this month.

He said: ``If someone offers you a cheesehead, don't say you want some wine. Just put it on your head and take a seat at Lambeau Field.''

Too bad Bush didn't give his dad, former President George Bush, similar coaching during the 1992 presidential race.

Campaigning that year with Packers Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr in Wisconsin, the elder Bush referred to Starr as ``Bart Staff.''

Apparently, Starr didn't hold any grudges.

He's out campaigning this year for Bush's re-election.

So with Bush guilt by association is OK... Is Kerry held to the same standard? IF so, Kerry is a Definitely a Communist because he was in the VVAW and they were funded by the CPUSA and Al Hubbard was funded by CPUSA to visit Hanoi a couple times... With Kerry Communism runs deep.

I would love to know if this piece was written Scott Lindlaw. Whoever wrote it, it sure smacks of desperation given its attempt to draw parallels between Kerry the Incompetent and George Bush, Sr.

You would start a Packer thread on today of all days, wouldn't you. Gotta give da Bears credit; Mike Sherman was outcoached yet again today. And by a first year coach named "Luvvy". The Packers should fire Sherman and hire Gilligan....

Got one more game in January, pal. Although it saddens me to think that we have to wait over three months til the next meeting. I hope the game turns out to have some meaning for either of us.

Packers-Bears is arguably the greatest rivalry in the history of organized sporting events; if you're not a Packers or Bears fan you wouldn't understand, etc.

The Pack have owned the Bears for the last several years, but I always thought of the Bears fondly, and respected them because they held out for fair play, and also because most of all they still played the game of football OUTDOORS, where it is meant to be played! I always could hate the Bears and love them at the same time.

Not so with the Vikings. I hate them with a passion, without love or respect. They are pussies who play in a dome, and they are given to pulling stunts like putting PA systems immediately behind the visiting team's bench. They also tend to accept bungholes such as Randy Moss and Chris Hovan with open arms, guys who are detrimental to classic football as Packers-Bears fans know it. In short, they are losers. The Superbowl Vikings were o-fer-the-20th-century, and I hope they are o-fer-forever.

I don't have those feelings for the Bears. Jim McMahon, what a legend. Walter Payton. Gayle Sayers. Brian Piccolo. Dick Butkus. All Class Acts, not capable of being a Viking.

Truth be told, the present state of the NFL should probably be credited to the Bears and Packers, and to a lesser extent, the Giants and Colts, and possibly the Browns.
