In the early-morning hours of Sept. 8, Dan Rather was preparing to fly to Washington for a crucial interview in the Old Executive Office Building, but torrential rain kept him in New York.
White House communications director Dan Bartlett had agreed to talk to "60 Minutes," but only on condition that the CBS program provide copies of what were being billed as newly unearthed memos indicating that President Bush had received preferential treatment in the National Guard. The papers were hand-delivered at 7:45 a.m. CBS correspondent John Roberts, filling in for Rather, sat down with Bartlett at 11:15.

I stumbled on that one at first. It's not immediately apparent.
But the time/date stamp on the faxes was reportedly 6:41 PM on September 2 (a Thursday). They were faxed to a NYC phone number (212-xxx-1998, as I recall). They would have arrived at 7:41 PM EDT, well after business hours.
My guess is that Mapes came into the office on the morning of Sept 3, retrieved the faxes, and immediately alerted her superiors.
Or it could be that Mapes picked up the hard copies on Thursday, faxed a copy to herself in NYC (as insurance), then took a night owl from DFW back to NYC. Or, perhaps, Mapes was in Dallas and got a duplicate fax Thursday evening, alerting NYC on Friday morning.
If we knew exactly when Mapes met with Burkett, it would help. But there is no shortage of logical scenarios explaining the 9/2 faxing, 9/3 alerting timetable.
Burkett is well known at the Abilene Kinko's. He has an account there. Plus, the local Democrat party holds their meetings in a Kinko's meeting room.
The management has already agreed to hold the security tapes, "in case they are needed".

Ex-guardsman gave Bush records to ClelandAUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A retired Texas National Guard officer mentioned as a source of disputed documents on President Bush's service in the Guard said he passed along information to a former senator working with Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry's campaign.
In an Aug. 21 e-mail to a list of Texas Democrats, Bill Burkett said after getting through "seven layers of bureaucratic kids" in the Kerry campaign, he talked with former Sen. Max Cleland, Georgia Democrat, about information that would counter criticism of Mr. Kerry's Vietnam War service.
Where did you find the fax information? I've been looking everywhere for that info.
My memory is quirky. I bad with names & can never remember where I put my car keys. ;o)
"It's been taken care of" caught my attention. When you see somone say something like that, you wait to see what shoes start to drop.
CBS has been in bed with the DNC for ages. Someone around here called me as nutty as a DUer when I posted something about Rather being a traitor for the way they pushed the Abu Garab story in the way that they did. Hillary's screwed up response during the hearings showed she had knowledge prior to the story breaking.
Here's a question .. Did Burkett "reassembled the file" or did someone else help him?
The dems are soooo predictable. I aways laugh when they claim "no record", "no evidence", or Al and Bill's fav, "not a shread of evidence"...bla...bla...bla
1. Who is the "we" in "We have reassembled the files".
2. Who is the "unimpeachable source".
The answer to either or both will lead us deeper into the bowels of the Democrat party.
I'm still interested in the Robert Strong connection, as well. Strong, an English professor and apparently introspective type, isn't the type to have inserted himself into the cabal. Somebody recommended him to CBS and Rather was led to believe he was of sufficient importance for Himself to fly to Austin to interview him.
Strong might be a Robin Rather connection. But, in that case, there's somebody else telling both Robin and Bill what to do and when to do it.
It's called giving someone enough rope to hang themselves..I love it ...
That's what I recall him saying
And yes, his daughter did mention that he is working on a book
Not to fear in Abilene. It's not only "The purtiest town Ah've ever seen", it's a straight-laced kinda place, as well. Three small colleges -- two of them church-sponsored.
A Kerry campaign official said the campaign could find no record of any contacts with Burkett.
They should look in Hillary's nightstand...
The thing Jamie Lee Curtis asked the guy to help her take off as she flashed her chest at him in the train car. I'm thinking it was "A Fish Called Wanda".
Because the New York Times said so. There is no other basis for this dismissal. And the Times merely wrote that the SBVFT were "not credible" without citing a single reason for their assertion.
But, in the MSM, that's even better than facts...
I was at a concert tonight, The singer said they were going to be on a morning show on CBS and when he said "CBS" everyone started booing. He then said, "Yeah I know, it is Dan Rather's Network, but he will be asleep."
Excellent points! I keep thinking there has to be some person or persons operating in the background that we don't yet know about -- not even biased, partisan CBS would be dumb enough to take a bunch of "newly uncovered documents" straight from Bill Burkett and rush them onto national TV. Cleland's role may loom large, for Rather would consider him an 'unimpeachable' source (though why Cleland could be expected to know anything about TANG documents is a mystery to all except rabid leftists). Barnes could well play a large role -- did he merely tell his fairy-tale because CBS showed him documents, or did he have a role in arranging for the documents to be created and/or sent to CBS? He started flogging this horse back in May, so there may well have been many discussions in the rancid swamps of the Texas Demagogic Party between May and August. Burkett could even be the "fall guy" for a conspiracy he doesn't know about, because why would a former TNG officer produce such incredibly shoddy forgeries? (I know about the point made that there are 'Army' terms in the forged TANG documents, which could point toward Burkett, but loads of other people in the Texas Democratic Party circles could be responsible for that, too......
They have.
But when you're driving a wagonload of horses**t, you leave a trail...
Sorry to interrupt this interesting discussion but Im fairly new here ..How can I get someone thrown off ?..There is a guy on another thread who's posting 100 of the same insane message ..Thanx all
