Host Says Rather Criticism Got Him Fired
Lexington Herald-Leader ^ | 9/16/04 | AP - Peggy Andersen

SEATTLE - A radio talk-show host said Saturday he has been fired for criticizing CBS newsman Dan Rather's handling of challenges to the authenticity of memos about President Bush's National Guard service.

"On the talk show that I host, or hosted, I said I felt Rather should either retire or be forced out over this," said Brian Maloney, whose weekly "The Brian Maloney Show" aired for three years on KIRO-AM Radio, a CBS affiliate here.

Maloney says he made that statement on his Sept. 12 program. He was fired Friday, he said.

"What they have expressed is essentially that my show went in a direction they're not comfortable with," Maloney said.

KIRO Radio's general manager, Ken Berry, did not return a call seeking comment. A staff member at the station said Berry would not comment because it is a personnel matter.

Rather cited the memos, purportedly written by Bush's late squadron commander, in a Sept. 8 "60 Minutes II" segment. The memos indicated the commander was pressured to "sugar coat" Bush's performance and that Bush ignored an order to take a physical.

Several document experts have said the memos look suspiciously like they were written on a computer, not a 1970s-era typewriter. Rather said Sept. 10 that there was no definitive evidence of forgery.

On Wednesday, the network said it would work harder to address concerns about the memos.

Maloney said he had felt free to comment on the controversy and on Rather.

"I really felt he was taking the network's credibility down with him," Maloney said in a telephone interview.

"Talk-show hosts have generally had a lot of independence in these kinds of issues," he said. "Nobody's ever said, 'You can't criticize CBS News.'"

KIRO Radio is affiliated with CBS but owned by Entercom, a national radio broadcasting company based in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

Well this is pretty typical really. The Democratic party statements cannot stand up to any scrutiny. If you question their facts it's dirty politics, racisim, questioning my patriotism.

I remember JFK speaking (back when he would answer unscripted questions) and someone didn't agree with his view. His reply was 'You weren't listening to me'.

The GOP is far from perfect but these new fangled Democrats really suck they're scum. To be politically correct I don't hate them for who they are but what they do and say.

There were way too many. The whole store seemed like an anti Bush assault. I live in NY so I am not really bothered, other than for the sheer ignorance and stupidity of these people.

I recently started taking a self defense/street fighting class and wanted a good book. We learn alot about methods taught to the SAS and WWII soldiers about to fight the Japanese. Really good stuff!

I am confident that the sales of prozac will spike in NY on Nov. 3!!!

Evanston Avenue North and North 36th Street in the Fremont District

Why is this statue posing in Fremont? Because after it was crafted by the Soviet artist Emil Venkov and erected in 1988 in Poprad, it was torn down by angry Slovaks during Czechoslovakia's 1989 liberation from communism, and left in a junkyard with Lenin's face smudged in a puddle of mud. In came Lewis Carpenter, a Seattle resident and art connoisseur, who happened to be teaching in Poprad at the time. He stumbled upon the toppled statue and was greatly impressed with its artistic merit. Carpenter bought the statue (rumor has it for $13,000) and mortgaged his Issaquah house to afford the cost of shipping it home ($28,000). When the statue was first raised in Fremont, many Russian émigrés protested the move, arguing that Lenin represented the system that had persecuted and killed millions of their people. But the "tolerant" segment of the Fremont community ultimately won out. Lenin stayed. The accepted interpretation, bestowed with much highbrow sophistication, was that the statue wasn't about communism, but about pure art, devoid of political meaning. In other words, the sculpture was simply a profound reminder of how art transcends and outlives politics.

"that the statue wasn't about communism, but about pure art, devoid of political meaning."

Just like Clinton didn't really lie under oath, since it was 'just about sex'. Just like when Hollywood awarded that Nazi filmmaker saying "you can seperate the work from the person".

Liberalism IS a mental disease!!!!

That statue would look more at home and appropriate if it were standing in a pool of blood. A pity the Russian emigres haven't so decorated it.

You know, I don't listen to KIRO, they tend to be more liberal, and not one of the two conservative talk radio stations here (KVI and KTTH). I don't know this host - I've no idea if he was liberal or conservative, but it's an interesting action either way.

He worked briefly at KVI, before KTTH existed, and before Pete Weissbach came on board. He's conservative and used to work talk radio in Reno. Called himself the Radio Equalizer. I like him. This may be a blessing in disguise to get out of that rat radio station on Eastlake

The Democratic party statements cannot stand up to any scrutiny.

That's the disadvantage they get for having a cheerleading press. They never really get tested. Conservatives facing a hostile press have to be able to justify their policies and actions and think on their feet.
