What Did Hate-Crime Hoaxer Dunn Cost the Colleges?

What Did Hate-Crime Hoaxer Dunn Cost the Colleges?

That's the big question the judge asked at her sentencing, which was postponed to December 15, following a psychiatric evaluation of the hate-crimes hoaxer. Calling Claremont McKenna College professor Dunn a "bald-faced liar," Judge Horan stated: '"Ms. Dunn doesn't have to stand up and say she did it," Judge Charles Horan said during Friday's hearing. "But it sure would help the court in deciding whether prison time is appropriate."'

According to a reliable source, an alumnus of the Colleges who attended the hearing: 'The judge was disappointed--his word--that there was no one in court representing the Colleges. When he asked if any college presidents were there, getting no response, he said "Zero for five, huh?"'

My source goes on: 'The judge will entertain ordering restitution...he said that she would be on the hook for it. He said to the DA, that on Dec 15, he wanted a letter from the Colleges either "saying they did not suffer any damage, or
providing a list of damages".'

Billing Dunn should be a lot easier than raising money from indignant alumni or raising tuition.

To review the charges against Dunn, see the newspaper account below:

"Dunn was convicted last month of filing a false police report and two counts of attempted insurance fraud stemming from a March 9 incident at the Claremont Colleges in which she reported that her car was vandalized with racial and anti-semetic [sic.] slurs.

"Two witnesses later came forward and reported seeing Dunn drive into a parking lot in an already vandalized car and slash her own tires.

"The incident sparked widespread media coverage and prompted all five of the Claremont Colleges to cancel classes for a day of anti-hate rallies.

"Dunn continues to deny that she vandalized her car or filed a false police report."

She faces more than three years in state prison.

She'll probably get vacation pay for any time served locked up!

She not on faculty. She's visiting. The school let her go.

Soon there will be a job opening at CBS - Dunn appears to be well-suited for the job.

"anti-semetic" seems to be a new form of "hate crime" - perhaps relating to semeiotics, the branch of medicine having to do with interpretation of symptoms.

The point is not whether she is currently on the faculty. Any sane employer, even a liberal college, would fire (excuse me, let go sounds nice and PC)an employee that perpetrated such a costly and cruel hoax.

All I was pointing out is that she will not be receiving the kinds of benefits that a regular faculty member would, since she was not on faculty, just visiting.

I agree with the general point you are making - she was visiting so they could easily just not hire her back and pick someone else instead in the job search for the position.

On the other hand, visiting professors are considered "faculty". While employed, she would have been considered part of the faculty with the same options of retirement plans, health plans, etc., as opposed to being part of the staff (adminsitrators, secretaries, ets.).

She had a one-year contract which expired last June. The college did not re-new it. She's entitled to nothing.

The cost is to the college's reputation. The financial costs are the days lost by all students and faculty because of this nitwit. Indirect costs are all those fixed expenses that go on, whether or not teachers are teaching or students are learning.

More indirect costs are the time spent by law enforcement personnel (plus campus police) on false allegations.
