The First Rathergate
The CBS anchors precarious relationship with the truth.
By Anne Morse
Critics are calling the media scandal over the Jerry Killian forgeries "Rathergate." But to thousands of Vietnam veterans, the real Rathergate took place 16 years ago when Dan Rather successfully foisted a fraud onto the American people. Then, unlike now, there was no blogosphere to expose him.
On June 2, 1988, CBS aired an hour-long special titled CBS Reports: The Wall Within, which CBS trumpeted as the "rebirth of the TV documentary." It purported to tell the true story of Vietnam through the eyes of six of the men who fought there. And what terrible stories they had to tell.
"I think I was one of the highest trained, underpaid, eighteen-cent-an-hour assassins ever put together by a team of people who knew exactly what they were looking for," said Steve Southards, a Navy SEAL who told Rather he had escaped society to live in the forests of Washington state. Under Rather's gentle coaxing, Southards described slaughtering Vietnamese civilians, making his work appear to be that of the North Vietnamese.
"You're telling me that you went into the village, killed people, burned part of the village, then made it appear that the other side had done this?" Rather asked.
"Yeah," Steve replied. "It was kill VC, and I was good at what I did."
Steve arrived home "in a straitjacket, addicted to alcohol and drugs" knowing that "combat had made him different," Rather intoned. "He asked for help; that's unusual, many vets don't. They hold back until they explode."
Rather then moved on to suicidal veteran named George Grule, who was stationed on the aircraft carrier Ticonderoga off the coast of Vietnam during a secret mission. Grule described the horror of watching a friend walk into the spinning propeller of a plane, which chopped him to pieces and sprayed Grule with his blood. The memory of this trauma left Grule, like Steve, unable to function in normal society.

not the same burkett
I have to go but took a quick look and Linda is noticing what I posted the other day: The common thread is "Vietnam".
One day, he walked into a Bureau Chief's Office in Siagon. The chief said, "Hi Jack! What's today's body count?" Dad told him he didn't know.
Then the chief asked, "Do you have any good stories about American commanders screwing up and getting their units blown away?" Dad said no, but he had some interesting articles about Guardsmen and Reservists spending thier time off helping the local villagers by building clinics and schools and digging wells.
The chief then asked, "How about some pictures of bodies hanging on barbed wire?" Dad told him no, but he had some great photos to go along with the stories he had.
The chief said, "Let me see them!" Dad handed them over and watched as the chief quickly looked through them. The chief then threw them back in my Dad's face and stated, "I'm not gonna use any of this shit! It gives the wrong impression of the war!"
Dad said, "You know, I think you are a Communist!" The chief responded, "You may be right, but as long as I am bureau chief, the American people are only going to see this war the way I want them to see it!"
With that, my Dad bent down, picked up the articles and photos, turned his back and without another word, WALKED OUT OF DAN RATHER'S OFFICE!
And that, Fellow Freepers, is why we have just got to win this war!
Liz Trotta putting the smackdown on our "beloved" educrats...
FNC reads FR and if they're smart, specifically search for your screen name posts...you are without doubt one of our best researchers on the net.
OMG, Liz Trotta knocked it out of the park!!!!
Those people ARE the ones who destroyed the Vietnam vets!!!
No. B.G. Burkett - see the Stolen Valor link...

MEMO ON BUSH BEING A-WALL
It should be known that I don't trust this Bush person. He is constantly doing cocaine and playing Mario Brothers games
er
I mean Pong. We have pong way back in the seventies, right? Yes, he is doing cocaine and playing Pong and playing CD's real loud and not his duties. No he has not showed up, and is thus A-WALL, which I hope those who reads this now or sometime in the future knows is a very bad thing. Also, he looks like a chimp and is a bad man. Please take heed of this authentic memo from the seventies . . . which is now.
Bush's Superior Officer
It is so refreshing to hear women like Linda Vester and Liz Trotter instead of the crazed vapidity of the Susan Estriches.
CBS has zero credibility.
I wish we had a list of all the lies they have told us. But by far the biggest lie is one that is so enormous that is can only be termed deliberate propoganda. And that is what they told us repeatedly about our Vietnam Veterans.
I wish some enterprising lawyer would step up and file a class action suit on behalf of all our Vietnam vets against CBS for that 1988 "documentary".
And, by the way, that 1988 "documentary" was, we now find out, just like Moore's F911.
I don't think is gets any lower.
