Why would the economic problems be so drastic for us though? I know we purchase a lot of goods from Taiwan, but if that wasn't available, wouldn't most of those companies (which are American-owned anyway) just relocate?
well do you realize what happens just when a typhoon hits taiwan and a couple factories that make computer memory get messed up? It takes a LONG time for everything to straighten out and thats just with a couple plants going down.. Imagine a near total stoppage of every piece of computer equipment in one day, NASDAQ would puke...
My advice then is for these companies in Taiwan to start relocating. I hear the weather in Sri Lanka is wonderful this time of year! lol
Better yet, maybe they could "insource" and come back to the good ole' USA, where, unlike Taiwan, we keep the Commies at bay!
I agree... I dont understand why the world has all its egg in one basket either.. one dandy of a typhoon and were screwed... Im a geek, i need my new technology, when i start seeing supply effected so easily i get scared...

You seem to know very little about the history of the island...I would suggest you read more on the issue.
There is a reason that the United States and the United Nations does not recognize Taiwan as an independent sovereign nation.
Ah, but we did for decades, until Carter. How could they be soveriegn one moment, and not the next. They still are...and they have a zest and love for liberty that anyone visiting the island can see and feel. We would be foolish to abandond them on many grounds...economically, politically, morally, strategically (militarily) and internationally because of the unbelievably dangerous signal it would send. China would wrap up the Pacific rim rapidly and nicely if we were to abandon them.

Also it is the Navy that provides support with aircraft and missile launching. If they're all in the China Sea, they are not supporting the Iraq mission.
I don't believe all Navy carriers are currently assigned to Iraq nor that anyone proposes sending all Navy carriers to the South China Sea. The main point is that there are forces available for the Taiwan area. I'm sure someone else has a much better idea of the current numbers as far as Navy carriers are concerned, and this is assuming they don't change.
Waiting till after Pres Bush leaves office no doubt....and one of their beyatches takes office
