Who takes on China for it's Treatment of the Tibetans??the US & EU pass the occassional resolution,but what else??most nations are not interested in having the Dalai Lama around-even India ,which has harboured the Tibetan Govt in exile for over 40 years,is giving up it's opposition to China's position on Tibet for the sake of improved relations.The same goes for Taiwan's case-Singapore,Australia ,Russia & the EU(including Britain) have said they will stick to the 'one China' policy & will stay neutral in any war.China's economic might will ensure that any global reaction,arising from an attack on Tibet,will be more or less cosmetic.
Yeah right, like Taiwan only creates the world's silicon die fabs for pretty all CPU, microchips, computer RAM, lcd monitors etc...Yes we should tell Taiwan all your base are belong to China.

There you go. China's stockpile of Oil alone should tell you that there will bve a showdown down the road. Everyone knows you need "OIL" to run the war machine and keep it going. The oil leads to the spoil. The US is stocking up and the Chineese. How about Russia now. They need some to.

uhhh maybe you need to look into what all Taiwan exports to us and how much American investment has goine into Taiwan before you just write it off.
The reason is the Taiwan issue has settled for the moment, but has'nt change the Chinese policy. I dug this out of my archives soon as Putin went ahead with his speech about striking "anywhere". This will bring in the Chinese.
This article is a couple of years old. Nothin' but a bunch of hot air. China's economy is dependant on the American consumer. If they start a war with us, they will go broke and face more civil unrest.

While U.S. battles terrorism around the globe and in its own backyard, it ignores a growing arms buildup in China and cautions Taiwan not to provoke the mainland, reports Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
China was the developing world's largest arms customer last year, signing trade agreements worth more than $3.6 billion, the online intelligence newsletter reports in the current issue. Russia remains the biggest arms supplier to China. Since 1996, China has purchased from Moscow at least 72 Su-27 jet fighters, two Sovremenny-class destroyers, missiles systems and four Kilo-class attack submarines.
Last year China agreed to buy eight Kilo-class project 636 submarines and had options to purchase two additional destroyers and surface-to-air missiles.
Most of China's arms buildup is oriented to its No. 1 foreign policy and military objective – the reunification of Taiwan with the mainland.
As evidence, G2 Bulletin reports, China has built up its missile battery along the Fujian coast opposite Taiwan. There are now about 450 missiles in position, with the number increasing by 75 a year.
This issue is still not dead. The proof is in the pudding.

OK, I'll admit my bias up front. My wife is a naturalized US citizen from Taiwan. Her half of MY family and my daughter's family still live in Taiwan. Taiwan is the last bastion of unregulated, free-wheeling capitalism left IN THE WORLD. They are our best friends in the region -- even better friends than the Japanese, IMHO. How could we not come to their aid if they requested it? The Taiwanese are no longer recognized as a country due to Carter's cowardly kowtowing to the Chicoms back in the 70s. To your average Taiwanese, the only president worse than Bill Clinton was Jimma Carter. They despise the man. The Taiwanese are a scrappy bunch. They will defend their island NATION to the death. And to hear my wife tell it, if the Chicoms mess with them they will deeply regret it (she believes that any Chinese victory will be a pyrrhic one). I think she's right. The Chicoms need to back off and get over it. They have NEVER had claim to Taiwan. I believe what we should do to show our resolve toward Taiwan would be to recognise them as a nation once again. Let the Chicoms bluster. Who needs the trade between China and the US more -- them or us? Myself, I can do without all the cheap Chinese crap imports until they come to their senses.
If you see it as inevitable then would it be better to put it off until later after they have taken Taiwan and consolidated their power?
China becomes more like the US every day, and we become more like them. In a few years we should just declar ourselves to be a province.
No they won't. They will nationalize all the factories that American companies have built there and manufacture their own products for sale and for national security. The US taxpaywer will go broke because under OPIC we are liable for any losses American companies have due to political unrest or revolution when they offshore. The only suffering will be done by the American people because of job losses and the American taxpayers.
Failing to defend Taiwan would be a disaster. Our allies in the Pacific Rim and the Indian Ocean would rightly judge that we will not stand by them either and will gravitate into China's orbit.
That will deeply degrade our ability to project power into the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean. This guarantees that, when the big war comes with China, we will operate at a severe strategic disadvantage and that the war will be fought over Midway and Hawaii, rather than Taiwan and Japan and Singapore.
OTOH, if we defend Taiwan, our allies remain firm and there may never be the big war with China as the correlation of forces (in their terminology) is not favorable.
Were Taiwan independence the only issue at stake, then you might have an argument--although throwing millions of freedom-loving, loyal allies to the tender mercies of the PRC strikes me a morally bankrupt--especially when we have promised to defend them.
