He is one of America’s best known, well respected television newsmen.

But Dan Rather was fighting for his reputation today after documents he used in a story questioning President George Bush’s military service increasingly appeared to be fake.

After initially insisting that the memos were genuine, the 72-year-old CBS anchorman has now conceded they could be forgeries.

My take is that Dan Rather recalcitrant attitude vis-à-vis his Memos come from watching too much television.

Rather watches OJ get away with murder, Michael Jackson sleep with children unmolested, Coby Brian have rape charges retracted, and figure what’s a little fraud compared to these guys. What? I’m Dan Rather! Why can’t I engage in wonton duplicity? It’s not like I’ve killed anybody.

" I’m Dan Rather! Why can’t I engage in wonton duplicity? It’s not like I’ve killed anybody."

Oh so wrong. If he were to tilt the scales, and Kerry got elected. There is the potential for thousands of deaths that could be directly tied to this event.

Fortunately Dan is a little senile at this point, and his crayola copies didn't quite fool anyone.

It is only fitting that Dan Rather, the Imaginary Marine, and Sen. Kerry, the Friend of The Army in Black Pajamas, are being undone by the bloggers in pajamas.

It's not his fault that he and the democratic party appear to have acquired the attitude of "First we'll make the president look bad and then when the damage is done, we'll retract it quietly... we still win!". I'm sure the Kerry smear machine has some quantitive part in this.

If Dan Rather really wants to convince the public that he's not partisan and really is interested in learning the truth, let him have Mr. Newcomer on his show. That will be the test.

So far, he's been all too happy to have an 86 year old lady, who's an acknowledged Bush hater, come on the show so he can lead feed her damning setup questions. But how would he fare against Mr. Newcomer? My guess is, he'd get a severe public spanking.

Bump big time!! Respected by who!!?? His audience has dwindled down over the years to those who either don't have cable, or sat., or who can't get any other news. The sixty minute spot has more than not shown bias and downright slanted stories. I think Rather has believed his press notices for years...and now he is found out. I hope he goes down in flames and the quicker the better!

The sweetest part of this entire episode is that Danny boy even if he hangs on for a few months, at 73 is headed out the door one way or other soon enough and HIS legacy is going to be this scandal. Arguably not the most important thing he has done but being the last it will come to the top of the CV. And one other thing, where the heck is Walter Crankcase? He most often has some insight into current events he should not be poking his nose into. Any comments Walter?

CNN.com has a poll question up Who do you believe more about the National Guard records, CBS or President Bush?

CBS is winning!!! The sheep just keep following blindly.

Dan Rather is not a newsman, he just plays one on television.
