...Ms. Mapes, 48 years old, is a workaholic who spends years developing and nurturing relationships that might pay off in marquee scoops. CBS News executives say she spent two months reporting the Abu Gharib story before it was ready for broadcast. She spent close to five years digging into Mr. Bush's National Guard history....
Ms. Mapes also produced Wednesday's follow-up segment in which CBS -- after a week of dismissing calls for an internal investigation and defending the documents as authentic -- said it was aggressively investigating the source of the documents and acknowledged there was a legitimate chance they could be forgeries....
Ms. Mapes has extensive experience with politically sensitive news stories. Aside from the Abu Gharib story, her résumé includes persuading the biracial daughter of Strom Thurmond to talk on television for the first time and award-winning stories on the aftermath of 1991's Desert Storm.
...[S]ays Jon Klein, a former high-ranking CBS News executive, "She's the last person you'd ever expect to be in a controversy about credibility," he says. "She is one of the most credible people in the industry."
...In 1999, Ms. Mapes emerged from behind the camera when she refused a district judge's order to turn over a videotape and transcript of an interview Mr. Rather conducted with Shawn Allen Berry, one of three white men later convicted of dragging a black man to death behind their pickup truck in Jasper, Texas. Twice found in contempt of court orders, Ms. Mapes narrowly avoided jail time when CBS agreed to publish a full transcript on its Web site....
Ms. Mapes grew up in rural western Washington and landed her first big news job as a producer at the Seattle television station KIRO....

Mary Mapes produced CBS's Bush story.
And yet, for all that, she can't do any better than forged memos and a doddering 86-yo lying secretary.
after all the hoopla about this four years ago America moved on.......ms mapes is a nutcase partisan producer and needs to be on an unemployment line.
Obsession --- Oh!! The smell of it!!
egads, what a family tree (shudder)
Good job. Thank you for sharing it with us. b.
Democrat women are not very attractive at all!
(Notice I didn't call her Butt Ugly!)
Gee...how long did she work on the "Walls" Vietnam story that proved to be a complete fabrication. Airing that piece was totally irresponsible and should have ended the careers of both Mapes and Rather.
Yikes!
Commie pig!!
What a loser. This lady doesn't have anything else to do with her time other than to try to desperately scrounge up lies about Bush's Guard service. Big waste on the payroll.
One thing is certain about this fiasco. Either Mapes is toast or she ends up blaming Rather.
" She spent close to five years digging into Mr. Bush's National Guard history...."
And she relied on faxed memos from a month ago to bolster her story?
Five years? Five? That's a convenient number. So she started during the GOP nominating process and this is the best she can do?
5 Frickin' years!
5 years and all she and Dan Milhous Rather had to show for it was a handful of forgeries!
Tell us again why she and Dan Rather are not, at best, selling pencils on the sidewalk instead of warming chairs inside CBS headquarters.
And if it was not for Al Gore's invention, there would have been not recourse.
If I have not said it before:
Thank you Buckhead, Thank you Howlin, Thank you Jim Robinson.
And Thank you fellow FReepers!
That CBS paid this lady for FIVE YEARS! to dig and dig and dig and then paid her to put together a fake story when all her digging didn't pan out shows just what a political hatchet job this is!
"CBS News executives say she spent two months reporting the Abu Gharib story before it was ready for broadcast. She spent close to five years digging into Mr. Bush's National Guard history..."
Five years and she got it wrong, what about 2 months? How can we trust any of her work?
........and who have they allowed to spend years researching John Kerry's record, and when can we expect the report on this, or did the reporter get scooped by O'Neil and the SwiftVets?
It takes long hours and helps to be a workaholic to fabricate such tales.
