Bill Cosby says he should have chosen his words more carefully, but the message he's been heavily criticized for remains the same: African-Americans and all ``lower economic'' people must embrace education and take responsibility for their lives.
``Victims, get up if you can. Get your family together and stop blaming whatever,'' Cosby told a crowd of more than 3,000 gathered Thursday night at San Jose State University.
In kicking off the school's three-day Read-2-Lead Classic that's designed to promote literacy, the 67-year-old comedian refined the controversial remarks he made in May -- mocking lower-income African-Americans for ``not holding up their end'' and for blaming failure on racial ``oppressors.''
In a word, Cosby said, his message now is: ``integrity.''
``We need a transformation, and we need your help,'' Cosby said in an hourlong, joke-filled dialogue with San Jose State football coach Fitz Hill.
``The great part of being literate,'' Cosby quipped, ``is you can see the mistakes of so many people.''
Hill and Cosby, who both hold doctoral degrees in education, said the weekend event, which is planned around the school's Saturday football game with Morgan State University, provided a rare opportunity to use the ``huge platform'' of college sports to promote education.

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Cosby's no conservative, but he is right on here. Preach, brother, preach!!
A lot of whites could take this advice, as well.
According to the famous Churchill quote about liberals, conservatives and age, Cosby just took his time to grow up.
Hope he has an impact, and not just on the election.
What about the browns, the yellows, the pinks, and the purples? Could they take this advice as well?
Stop Blaming Whitey Bump!

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free!"

Does anyone remember his bit "Tonsils?" "Are you ready for the lie?"
(steely)
Yeah - Photobucket had a major server crash; they claim that the directories are due back up either later today or by Monday.
Dan Rather and his recent fabricated story being the most recent example.
John Kerry, "how long can you tread water?"
I saw Cosby live do the Carroll Shelby Cobra routine. Never laughed so hard in my life.
Bill Cosby, at least judging by his stated beliefs, is on our side. He may never make the overt leap -- and maybe he is more effective maintaining some liberal fig-leaf -- but a person can not talk this way and be a true liberal. Liberals simply do not raise the issue of self-help; the subject is taboo.
Some Cosby in the Sac Bee also as .. If someone wants to post it as a separate thread, Please do.

In classrooms, hair salons, ski-club picnics and private parties, African Americans in Sacramento and across America are debating Bill Cosby's searing remarks on dysfunctional black families.
Since May, Cosby, one of America's best-known fathers for his beloved TV role as Dr. Cliff Huxtable, has been calling out some African Americans for poor parenting and moral bankruptcy.
In the process, Cosby, 67, has taken on hip-hop and rap lyrics "degrading to African American women," saying they promote irresponsible sexual behavior.
Those messages, he says, contribute to a debilitating cycle of teen pregnancy and an "epidemic" high school dropout rate approaching 50 percent in inner cities.
Cosby, who performs two sold-out shows tonight at the Cache Creek Casino Resort in Yolo County, has provided fodder for "Boondocks" cartoonist Aaron McGruder and dozens of talk-show hosts, columnists and academics.
He's been called a prophet and an elitist, on the money and out of touch. But no one has questioned Cosby's credentials as a former inner-city Philadelphia kid - the son of a cleaning lady - who earned a doctorate in education and has given generously to African American schools and causes.
Good for Bill Cosby.
Cosby was a Medic in Korea. Seems his values as a soldier and medic have returned.
I wish people would listen to him.
