I am in the middle of Florida and I do know the destruction here. Florida cannot take to many more hits. Anyone want to buy property? Will be going real cheap.

Check the current status, in the animation that started this thread :country threatened by TWO cat. 5 hurricanes - Ivan, Javier (unprecedented)
There are more unprecedent things visible right now :
- the first time that a new born hurricane (hours old) manages to survive the highest mountains in the Caribbean (Dominican Republic)
- the depression that took the shortest time ever to turn into a hurricane (Karl, eastern Atlantic)

BOTH TROPICAL STORM JEANNE AND TROPICAL STORM CARL

Karl.

We got the remnants of Ivan in Hotlanta. Lots of rain, a little wind, that was about it.

Lots of rain . . . that's an understatement!

We had a blocked culvert and consequently a flooded crawlspace (but it didn't reach the furnace.) I've never seen so much water come down so fast. Tree was topped by the wind -- but at least we have our power and phone back.

Lots of rain . . . that's an understatement!

Getting through the flooded intersections was cool.

Kinda like boating, only more car-ish.

I have a high-clearance Explorer (an ancient one) - I just put one set of wheels on the sidewalk and DRIVE! Sometimes though I wish for my even more ancient Toyota Land Cruiser ute - it had a waterproof cover on the distributor cap and I never managed to stall it out no matter where we went (did manage to need the winch a couple times though). But it had no room for babies, so we had to sell it. . . now I want it back < sob > ;-)

Our main road along the river through Vinings always goes underwater when we have a big rain. There are some houses that some fool contractor built in the flood plain on artificially graded hills (we call them the "Vinings Indian Mounds") and the guy closest to the river has a john boat in his back yard, tied up to the downspout. I didn't go down to see, but I'm sure the john boat was floating this time! I understand that the folks over on Woodward Way got socked really bad though.
