"What it Means to be a Democrat" by David Van Os
"David Van Os for Supreme Court" website ^ | Undated | David Van Os

Posted on 09/16/2004 4:35:39 PM PDT by Bronc1

I have committed myself deeply to the democratic political processes of our society, because I believe that “su voto es su voz” – your vote is your voice – and that participation in the political process is one of the highest marks of good citizenship. To that end, I have attended every Texas State Democratic Convention since 1974; I have served as Democratic County Chairman for Travis County, I have served as a Democratic Precinct Chair in both Travis and Bexar Counties, and I have served as president of the Northeast Austin Democrats and chairman of the North East Bexar County Democrats. I have also run for political office previously, having offered myself proudly as a Democratic candidate for the Texas Supreme Court in 1998.

The political party system provides stability and organization for our society’s governmental and political structures, and I am proud of my political affiliation as a Democrat. Being a Democrat means that I inherit the political philosophies of great servants of the people such as James Stephen Hogg, Ralph Yarborough, Ann Richards, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. This is a proud legacy.

The political party system, when working properly, provides well-balanced government. When the system is working properly, no one political party has a monopoly on truth or power. Unfortunately, if something does not change, our political system is on its way to breaking, because the radical right wing that has hijacked the Republican Party is not content with merely being a political party. That radical right wing is not content to govern; it hungers to rule. Its decisions are so completely based on the pursuit of raw power that its actions no longer resemble the platform of the once-respectable Republican Party of days gone by. Many mainstream Republicans who believe in the principles of the American Constitution are aghast at the radical right-wing takeover of their party. One cannot blame them for their confusion. The Democratic Party offers them a new political home.

Today’s Texas Supreme Court is a bastion of the radical right wing that does not concern itself with justice for the ordinary people of Texas. As an experienced trial lawyer and appellate advocate, I am eminently qualified to serve the people on the highest Court of our State’s judicial branch of government. As a populist Democrat, who is proud of the pro-people values of my Party, I believe the time has come for the people of this State to seek a new direction and to elect a proud Democrat to the Texas Supreme Court. We have had ample experience with the pro-corporate radical Republican philosophy. That cold and cruel philosophy is shutting the doors of justice against the people of Texas. It’s time for a change. Elect a real Democrat to the Texas Supreme Court.

What a terrible inheritance. No wonder he is such a bitter person.

I have served as Democratic County Chairman for Travis County, I have served as a Democratic Precinct Chair in both Travis and Bexar Counties

So, Mr. Os, lawyer for the fully discredited and suspected memo-writer Bill Burkett, is heavily involved in the Democratic Party in Travis County Texas and was, indeed, chairman.

And, I forget, who was it that was the keynote speaker at the Travis County Democratic Party fundraiser in 2001?

Oh, yeah. Dan Rather. Sure. Everything is on the up and up.

"As a populist Democrat, who is proud of the pro-people values of my Party"

What people is he talking about? His is the pro-slavery, pro-segregation and pro-abort party. Indeed, with that last policy, we're lucky to have any people left.

Tanks for findin dis Bronc1 !

Yep, he couldn't resist. Second sentence of paragraph 3.

"those terrible, power-hungry, money-lusting, devil in their pocket Republicans".(paraphrased)

He is not a DEMOCRAT. I don't know what these people are, except what we used to call them before PC became vogue.

PC needs to die. PC really means "I have power over you and am better than you and you must respect me and not say anything."

Who caved into that? Did we as a nation vote on this? I sure missed that one.

PC should be defined as a government official who does not gossip about government business or foreign affairs of state.

Not because I call you GAY, when I see you with your hand down the front of your boyfriend's pants.

True, James Stephen Hogg was the Governor of Texas

but, ironically

.... Hogg is often remembered for naming his daughter Ima Hogg,

That cold and cruel philosophy is shutting the doors of justice against the people of Texas.

That philosophy is not cold and cruel and is the only hope for justice for the people of Texas as well as the rest of America. Your philosophy makes spoiled brats of citizens. Your "it's for the children" has done more harm and very little to benefit our children. The only way to serve the people is to allow them to serve themselves. You do not know what is good for anyone but you do know what you want for yourself. It stops right there.

I would submit that your party is the party of radicals and that the older of the names mentioned in your speech would not recognize the Democrat party of today. The democrat party has been hijacked by the likes of George Soros. This is your proud party of liberal left wing radicals of today.
