Dan Rather, the longest-serving and most outspoken of the major network news anchors, recently served as the star attraction at a Democratic Party fundraiser.
Donors paid as much as $1,000 for a private evening in Austin with the CBS newsman, according to an invitation obtained by The Washington Post. Rather's appearance at the March 21 gathering generated about $20,000 for the Travis County Democratic Party -- and will undoubtedly provide ammunition to critics who have long accused Rather of leaning to the left...Other hosts included Scott Ozmun, the county Democratic chairman, and Robin Rather, the anchor's daughter and a Texas environmentalist and marketing executive.

And don't forget, he also had a piece about the "religious right" published in "The Nation" and attended (and spoke at?) a fundraiser for Lear's Limo Liberals for the Hollywood Way (along with that other CBS non-partisan, Uncle Walt).
I'm glad Al Gore gave us the internet.
You can't say the Post is a bunch of right wingnuts.
They are trying to save whatever integrity there is left in their profession (and sell a bunch of newspapers)
You're gonner than a [insert stupid metaphor here]
OK, Burkett is very active in Texas Democrat politics. Burkett served at Chairman of the Steering Committee for his lawyer's run for Texas Democratic State Chairman. Van Os, Burkett's lawyer from San Antonio, is currently running for Texas Supreme Court.
So Burkett is deeply involved in the highest levels of Texas Democratic Party.
Flood DRUDGE? He is slowwwww. People keep yapping about sending every last tidbit to DRUDGE, as if it'll be picked up, or be posted immediately. You want to see speed and instant news? It's here!
Look, I may sound harsh, but you just can't float these unfinished theories out into the mainstream. They'll get shot down fast even if they are true if there are serious omissions or inconsistencies.
That't exactly what this kind of back-and-forth needs to do---to fill in the gaps and flesh out the details.
People! People! That fund-raiser was in 2001, not this year! Smoley Hokes, slow down and smell the daisies! Now, if you want something to chew on, why is Knox being given a pass because she's 86? Per Houston Chronicle, last week she said she had "no firsthand knowledge" of Bush's time in TANG. But this week, Rather managed to get her to say/imply she was personally acquainted with Bush, and his shenanigans were all the talk in the typing pool. She carefully said that she didn't type the forgeries, but she had typed ones similar or identical to them. She said someone changed her docs to keep from getting in trouble. So, is it possible she kept Killian's docs, passed them to a CBS source, who then retyped them to conceal his source. Perhaps her docs had her handwritten comments on them, which would reveal the provenance.
And Van O is connected to Clinton and Carville - there were pictures of each of them posing with Van O on another thread this morning.
So my guess is Billy, in the hospital room, with the telephone.
So probably he was there primarily to visit his daughter, and while there was invited to speak at a quickly arranged dinner
The point of the fundraiser in 2001, that Rather attended is that Barnes and his daughter, Robin attended it, too. That's why I posted the story and the link. The connection might be important.
