My college supports treason and terrorism!
By Judson Cox
On August 25th of this year, I went back to college. I chose Lees McRae College, a small, Presbyterian college in the mountains of North Carolina. I expected a degree of liberalism common to most colleges and universities, but I hoped for diversity of opinion and a healthy debate. Except for a handful of students, I have encountered no ideological diversity at Lees McRae College, but a group-think style of hard left indoctrination.
I was not shocked when a literature class devolved into a uniform trashing of our military. I was not surprised when the professor, and nearly every one of the students, described our soldiers as uneducated, poor, unintelligent, low class mercenaries sent to impose American imperialism on foreign innocents, or when they said that America had no business engaging in foreign wars. I was not even surprised when they said that the Iraqi people were better off under Saddam's sadist dictatorship than American liberation. These are the shibboleths of the left, and to be expected in circles of higher learning. They are acceptable (though pathetic) expressions of academic freedom.
What troubles me is that Lees McRae College is including Fahrenheit 9/11 among the few College Programs the school will present this semester. This film will be shown as a documentary, without a disclaimer addressing the many falsehoods it contains. There will be no rebuttal, and no presentation of a differing viewpoint. By sanctioning this film as an official college program, the college is tacitly endorsing the seditious conspiracy theories and blatant lies of the man John McCain rightly branded a "disingenuous film maker." One may wonder why an institution, presumably founded for the purpose of furthering knowledge, would present a malicious work of fiction as factual documentary, but I have come to expect little more from the supposed pedagogues of the modern university. There is a much more important issue that must be addressed.
Hezbollah, the terrorist organization responsible for the most American deaths prior to 9/11, has offered to distribute Michael Moore's propagandist work in Muslim countries. Hezbollah recognizes Fahrenheit 9/11 as a tool to recruit terrorists to kill Americans. Moore, whose hatred of America is as extreme as any member of al Qaeda, is pleased to fill the role of propagandist for our enemies. By blatantly providing aid and comfort to our enemies, Michael Moore is committing very high-profile treason. Using student funds to pay for a College Program that includes Fahrenheit 9/11 is comparable to writing a check to Osama bin Laden.
I cannot tolerate my tuition being used to support America's enemies. I support academic freedom, the free exchange of ideas, and a healthy debate, but I should not have to compromise my loyalties - just to gain a diploma. It may be too late for me to withdraw from college, and receive a refund of my tuition. However, with your help, such drastic action may not be necessary. I am sure that the donors to Lees McCrae College, the parents of current students, and most of the students themselves, would not approve of their money being used in this manner.
I urge each of you, my friends and readers, to visit www.lmc.edu. I ask you to contact the College President, Earl J. Robinson (email: robinson@lmc.edu , direct line: 828 -898-8785, or through the campus switch-board: 828-898-5241), and each of the Trustees . Please express to them your concerns, and make every effort to contact anyone who may have any connection to Lees McRae College. Please check out the Bobcat Boards discussion forum to see what other students are saying about this program (hint: nearly all of those who are in favor of presenting Fahrenheit 9/11 are faculty, those against are all students). Also, if you really want to go the extra mile, please write letters to the editors of North Carolina's newspapers .
It may be that the only way we can convince our colleges to promote education, instead of treason, is to publicize their actions. and threaten their funding.

I guess the fact that most of the people in the military have degrees and are required to have at least a high school diploma doesn't count. Ignorance in college -- geez. Sorry you have to put up with this!
This place is a tiny college in the certifiable BOONIES. Admittedly there are a surprising number of liberals in Western NC (they all retired there) but they tend to be clustered around Asheville, Brevard, and Highlands, and Banner Elk is way up in the hills. I guess the folks who were at loose ends when Black Mountain College folded and the folks who couldn't get work in Brevard may have made their way to Banner Elk, but still . . .
If the rot is there, it has struck deep.
I'm sorry, but I am laughing out loud.
Someone went looking for diversity of opinion at a small liberal arts college with an enrollment of 700 students?
That's hilarious.
We should go after this.... all the universities do this.... we need to eliminate tenure
Okay I know this is a long time since, but back when I was in college (when dinosaurs ruled the world), I was amazed that the ultraliberal college censors allowed anti arms agreement articles in the library from Morton Kondracke and Charles Krauthammer in the New Republic (which explains how they got past the Politburo).
Learning to succeed in an intolerant liberal dictatorship is an important lesson in life. Contrary to popular mythology, big business is not overwhelmingly conservative. And you might as well join the Socialist International in public service or teaching. You will have to learn how not to let them get to you and to set limits effectively to protect yourself.
It is not your problem to fix the broken students. It is your job to find out if the faculty members are broken and then to find another school to take care of yourself.
What would be great would be a better education reporting site where students/parents don't rate the faculty or schools as much as report problems to alert others.

I worked security at the ski resort at the top of Beech Mountain that overlooks the 'university', and for such a small school it sure did produce it's share of numbnuts.
Yep - all colleges and universities have a great deal of this crap!
It's a cycle of socialist ignorance disguised as intellectualism - passed from professor to student, who then becomes professor....and so on....and so on....
That college probably has more connection to terrorism than just support F911. Every school has an "activity fee", which the university uses to pay various left-wing activist groups and Muslim "Charities".
Well, the guy is so stupid he misspelled the name of his college. It's Lees-McRae College with a hyphen.
Perhaps Mr. Cox was looking for romance. It did start out as a girl's school.
Message sent To College
I understand a showing of the F/911 will be presented on campus in the near future. Im also told you will not be allowing a free speech rebuttal to this movies point of view?
If you have the intellectual courage to read the linked article, and still find that a free speech rebuttal to F/911 is not warranted, then you are UNAMERICAN. I also suspect your Board of Trustees will soon be bombarded with letters of dissatisfaction with this decision.
Please note this article is by Christopher Hitchens, someone very much in line with your / staff ideology. Apparently Chriss mind is still clear, and not yet full of blinding ideological hate.

Didn't Solzhenitsyn say that after the fall of the Soviet Union, the only remaining Communists were on American college campuses?
I can't find the exact quote.
"but they tend to be clustered around Asheville, Brevard, Highlands , and Banner Elk"
I can personally vouch for Brevard being a haven for leftists. When I attended college at Brevard in the fall of 1988, I had to vote absentee for the general election, thus I had to have someone witness my signature on the forms. When the college officials I asked to witness for me saw that I was registered Republican, they refused. I ended up withdrawing from the college the following semester, but also found liberals entrenched at the local community college I attended thereafter, Rockingham Community College (namely, a Dr. Lindley S. Butler).
I wish you luck! :)
Sometimes arguing with a liberal is like trying to reason with a bulldozer run amok.
Tell me about it. My mom went to Black Mountain State College (now mercifully defunct) which was a haven for downright communists even back in the 40s!
Boy, that really narrows it down.
Form letter response that I received from the LMC President
As a church-affiliated liberal arts college, Lees-McRae College tries to provide and promote a campus atmosphere of inquiry and debate. It is through a respectful interchange of ideas that we evaluate our own beliefs and those of others. As a result of open and respectful debate, our beliefs may undergo some modification, or they may grow deeper and stronger. This is the essence of a liberal arts education.
It is in this spirit that we will be showing Fahrenheit 911. The goal is to stimulate debate. Obviously, the more controversial a film is, the more debate it will generate. This is why, last semester, we invited a distinguished speaker to address the campus on The Passion of the Christ, and why we urged students to participate in debate on the merits of the film and on Mel Gibsons artistic decisions in making it.
Yes, Fahrenheit 911 is highly controversial. But it is not being shown in an attempt to sway students to Michael Moores position. Rather, it is being shown so that students can examine, evaluate, criticize and debate Moores positionand then make an informed judgment as to the merits of the movie and of Moores explicit and implicit beliefs. We encourage students to express divergent points of view. We expect that the debate will be lively and, at times, passionate. However, we will insist that all viewpoints receive a fair hearing in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
I would hope that all students and faculty would look forward to a stimulating, intellectually challenging debate, knowing that no one will be forced to adopt any particular position. I would hope that no one will feel that his or her beliefs are threatened in any way by attending the screening of the movie, or participating in the discussion. No student is required to attend this program, although we would prefer to see both 'sides' of the controversy equally represented.
