I'm told (this was before my time) that the evening news originally started out as a fifteen minute segment.

The sponsors may not be willing to pay for much more than this in the future.

Bu-bye Dan!

Indeed. It was a very big deal in the mid-1950s when the first half-hour show, the Huntley-Brinkley Report, first aired on NBC. I remember as a kid watching the first show, and, indeed, rejiggering our evening dinner hour to watch the news.

You are right. Evening News began as a news reader sitting behind a desk, reading wire service copy. No tapes, no graphics, no "field reports," and it lasted 15 minutes. No, I ain't old enough to remember that, but I've seen clips. LOL.

That's true.

When I was very young, the local news was 15 minutes, followed by the "CBS Evening News with Douglas Edwards."

30 minutes and out. Done.

Of course, we had a morning and evening paper, and there were about a dozen or more papers in NYC.

I cannot tell you whether or not the TV news was biased. I was still in my single digits!

Yup, Camel News Caravan with John Cameron Swayze. Our TV had one channel, NBC. Going to half hour was a big deal. Huntley and Brinkley are the first I remember on the half hour broadcast. Out of a half hour broadcast, you're getting about 10 min. of ads, 15 min. of "news you can use", and maybe 5 min. of actual news. We might have been better off with Swayze!
