CBS EXECS CONCERN OVER VIEWERSHIP PLUNGE; RATHER RATINGS FADE IN MAJOR MARKETS

CBS executives on both coasts have become concerned in recent days that Dan Rather's EVENING NEWS broadcast has plunged in the ratings since the anchor presented questionable documents about Bush's National Guard service.

NIELSEN numbers released this week show Rather fading and trailing his rivals in every Top 10 city, other than San Francisco, with audience margins in some cities running more than 6 to 1 against CBS!

Executives fear many voters inclined to vote for Bush are now switching off Rather.

"The audience appears to becoming polarized," a top CBS source said from LOS ANGELES on Thursday. "Rightly or wrongly, we're being perceived as 'anti-Bush,' which I do not think is fair to Dan, who is a fine journalist... of course we do not like to see the ratings coming back the way they are this week."

In Philadelphia, the nation's #4 market, Rather pulled a 2.6 rating/5 share on Tuesday night against ABC's 13.3 rating/23 share and NBC's 4.0/7.

In Chicago, Rather hit a 2.3/5 to ABC's 9.2/20.

CBS trailed ABC by more than 2 to 1 in Los Angeles.

And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS.

Rather finished dead last in New York during the 6:30 pm timeslot among all broadcast channels tracked by NIELSEN on Tuesday.

You would think CBS's ratings would be soaring what with everyone watching them try to hang themselves since last Thursday.

Looks like O'Reilly is eying the anchor job at a sinking ship.

Check out the John F. Kerry Timeline. Email it to your friends.

Great stuff:

This comes in response to CBS's presentation of forged documents in an attempt to influence the outcome of an election due to Rather's obvious agenda and their subsequent refusal to retract the story. Even CBS's pathetic attempt to respin some credibility on the story does not bother you. This is serious business. Fraud, if you will; something that should bother a credit card company.

You continue to advertise with them. I will continue to make you a product I do not use.

There is no doubt CBS will have to fire Rather or accept his resignation. But I think more will be required to salvage its authority as a news organization ...

The institution is fatally flawed. So was Arthur Anderson.

Surely, you don't think the NYT is objective, due to changes made as a result of being caught with Jason Blair.

Dan Rather has become the Kitty Kelly of MSM.

CBS E-mail said they have investigated this issue for five years, and all they can come up with is forged documents and the belief the content is true.

How's Viacom stock doing this AM? If you have it, ditch it.

It;s up 6 cents today as of 11:30 a.m. EST

I like the 5 day chart on this. Too bad we all didn't buy put options on this last week, we could have made some money and had fun doing it.

In the short term, maybe. In the long term, never. People who bother to watch the news, don't want to be lied to...

Pajamahadeen?! HA! HA! HA! That's great! :-)

I said it before, and I'll say it again....CBS (and others) truly do NOT understand the culture of the net. They might use the technology, but they aren't "in" the culture.

:-)

To Whom This May Concern,

As a big listener and viewer of WWJ (Detroit), I will no longer watch CBS TV 62, listen to WWJ, or support your advertisers with purchases until CBS News runs a retraction of the blatant bias report on President Bush. Furthermore, I would like to see a public admittal and dismissal of Rathers role as a news anchor. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue, it is an issue of fairness and accuracy of reporting. It is unfortuante that CBS will stand by the blatant disrespect of Dan Rather towards our president and even the art of journalism. All americans want is to be able to trust their news outlets. Otherwise they are demeaned to "Al Jazeera" level.

I'm suspicious. I wonder how much CBS may have paid Mrs. Knox to do Wednesday's interview. Her gossipy story seems to fit CBS's new focus, which is proving how "accurate" the documents are rather than if they are authentic.

However, only last week Mrs. Knox said she didn't pay much attention to Bush...now she has a definative impression that Bush's attitude reflected arrogance and that he refused Killian's order to take a flight physical. This just happens to coincide with the latest DNC attack ad that includes the song with the lyrics, ..."it aint me, it ain't me, I'm no Senator's son!"... It's another classic case of class warfare, which is a typical strategy of shallow minded liberals. That way they can shore up their main base, the gulible, the ignorant, and the poor.

I also called and wrote my local CBS affiliates' holding company.

WGCL in Atlanta is part of Meredith Corp. They own 6 CBS stations. The web site also gave info on their Ethics/Compliance Line
