If the US military can do something, I guess they should.
Maybe a phalanx from the New York City police department should be sent, since they did such a superb job with thousands of protesters during the RNC.
Considering they had a nearby 6.0 earthquake earlier this week,....then got hit by a Cat 5 hurricane,....hey man,..it ain't their week....he may want to address that letter to the Pope first.
This thread seems to have attracted all the biggest jerks on FreeRepublic. Don't these people know that this is an English colony, and that of all the world, England has been our main ally in Iraq?
Not that that should even matter, in this case. There are Americans trapped there too, including, apparently the children and grandchildren of at least one freeper.
I'm sure something could be coordinated in the spirit of 'multinational cooperation' if the pols wanted to.
We just may need our military in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama, if things go badly here...
They need a shock-dose of law and order to get the animals back in the cages....literally. It's an island, with all the criminals loose. Plus the other race and class resentments boiling over and exploding in the pitch dark. Not a good place for American expats tonight. Fort Apache, with flaming arrows coming in. Or Little Big Horn in isolated places.
Exactly right. Dot the "i's" later, get the help now. The Brits will only be grateful, not resentful.
Yeah...except I don't think the Church of England recognizes his authority. But did the earthquake truly have much effect there?
I was on that island many years ago and found the people there very friendly, white and black alike. We stayed in a guest house in a black neighborhood, everyone made us feel welcome, didn't seem like race was a big deal. I personally would be ashamed if they asked for help and the US blew them off.
However, I'm not sure that they have actually asked.
We're only talking about a company of MPs, for a week. A rapid mobilization drill. I know they're already strapped, just designate a guard unit which is scheduled to rotate to Iraq. A couple of transport planes, that's it. One week, to reestabish law and order, until we can ferry in constables from other islands.
>You sir, just convinced me to never visit or spend my money
>on your island.
Why is that? The Caymans are a wonderful place, probably the second finest Atlantic Island destination behind Bermuda or the B.W.I.
Perhaps you don't recall the incident where their government turned away a cruise ship full of gays because their presence would have been detrimental to the public good.
No property taxes, either.
Great place, unless you're a liberal.
Hope they get things back in ordnung.
LOL!
Actually Travis... Most caymanians are god fearing people and decent... it's the jamacian that come and ruin it for everyone...
The way I was brought up, if your neighbor needs help, you try to give it. Especially a good neighbor, as this one is.
Broadly speaking, I was wondering just WHAT sort of cock-up HM gov't would pull or has pulled on THIS occasion.
Were I in charge of the gov't of the Caymans, I guarantee you on my life that I should apply to the US for, at minimum, ''protectorate'' status, probably a request likely to be granted given these islands' principal industry, true? (w!)
What constables from what other islands....?
Probably served more as a harbinger than a destruction,..I believe Cayman islands were the closet landmark to the epicenter some 160 miles out in the sea.
Yes, I understand the Jamaica situation, I'm being guarded about the class/racial aspects.
It is anarchy. TOTAL ANARCHY.
I am praying my daughter and her 3 children
are able to leave tomorrow on the Delta flight
I have jumped thru hoops to obtain tickets.
Today's Delta flight was cancelled,
no reason given.
She came face to face with looters in her house,
so she gave them ALL her food, but that wasn't
enough for them... they took her whole refridgerator,
and stripped her kitchen of EVERYTHING... utensils,
cooking ware, electric appliances, EVERYTHING.
The arrangement which will be made will be for policemen from unaffected parts of Jamaica (if available after their own problems) or St. Lucia, St. Vincent etc to come in to help restore order. It's better to have a black Caribbean English-speaking cop swinging the bobby stick and cracking heads. The Brits will pay their bills in the short term I expect. But we can send a company of MPs much faster than anyone else, and they need the law and order restored NOW, not next month.
Onyx what part of GC is your daughter in... I am totally shocked...
I hope she can just stay at the airport until a flight is available. Expect cancellations with no warning or explanation, that is par for the post disaster course. But she has to be at the airport to grab the unexpectedly available seats. The airport will also be safer, since the corporate airline employees will be "authority figures" and the closest to cops she is likely to see. Looters will avoid the airport, which is one of the places likely to have cops. And it will probably have drinking water and some basic food available. A few hard days, then they're out, and you can take them out to fancy restaurants.
