Windows Update: Where are the files kept?

Posted on 09/15/2004 8:34:50 PM PDT by pctech

Windows Update, under Windows XP, seems to have changed with the advent of the newer looking feature. Under the older system, the updates were downloaded to the computer's hard drive under a temporary directory called "WUTEMP." Now under the newer (allegedly sleeker) interface I can't find the files as they are being downloaded.

I absolutely hate the new Windows Update, but then again when Bill Gates do anything that pleases the masses on a whole. I used to be able to copy those downloads as they were being downloaded but now I can't do it cuz I can't find the "BLEEP"ing files. Can anyone out there in Freeper Land help me? Or do you even know what I'm talking about?

They are usually downloaded into a folder with a string of random characters.

And what's that supposed to do??? I know about viewing the details of files and folders but the folder containing the files can't be found. Give me more detailed instructions.

I am sorry I don't know how much you know about XP and I have not used 98 since it came out. If you are trying to view all your files, right clicking on start, clicking on view details should show all of your drives and all of your files.

I'm not a big fan of the Windows Updates myself. I wish Microsoft would sell them in stores on CDs instead of having us download them for free over the Internet. I would happily pay about $10 every month or so to get the latest and greatest patches on CD than to have to fuss with them over an Internet connection. In fact, I would pay a reasonable monthly fee, say $5 or $10 a month, to have Microsoft send me the CDs in the mail.

They should also charge for the Microsoft Explorer Browser instead of bundling it in with the OS. If they had Explorer shrink-wrapped in stores for about $49.99, I'd buy it.

Doing this would not only keep the government from suing them all the time (for giving stuff away for free) but also would help fatten Microsoft's bottom line. I don't know why they give away so much for free. Bill Gates could be so much richer. What a fool.

Could they be in a 'hidden' file? If so need to expose them under Settings/Control panel/Files & Folders. (I don't have XP, but all the others do that.)

I already got SP2 but haven't installed it yet.

Maybe I haven't explained the situation clear enough. Normally, when installing updates, the files being downloaded were copied to a folder called "WUTEMP." As they were downloading I'd copy them out of that folder and store them elsewhere for future use.

Now that's not happening with the advent of the newer Windows Update. What I'm trying to find out is if the files are being copied somewhere else and where that somewhere else. I'd tried searching all night last night while the downloads where being downloaded and I couldn't find them anywhere and nothing could tell me where the newer files were being stored.
