Johnny Ramone, member of punk legends ’The Ramones,’ dies at 55

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band “The Ramones,” has died. He was 55.

Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs “I Wanna be sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop,” among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

The band’s singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.

Johnny Ramone founded “The Ramones” in 1974 with Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band.

Ah, Galaxie 500. They were pretty great. A fellow conservative indie rocker? Lonely out there ain't it?

RIP Johnny, a kindred spirit.

Damn straight - I first sampled the Ramones sometime around 78 and have been a fan ever since. The Ramones tided me over in the dark period between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the arrival of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

And the song "The KKK took my Baby away" was a song written by the ultra liberal Joey personally blasting Johnny for stealing his girlfriend and then marrying her. Get it? He was calling Johnny a right wing bigot!!! They never ever spoke(even till joey's dying day) after Johnny married her.

LYRICS
She went away for the holidays said she’s Going to l.a. but she never got there She never got there, she never got there, they say

She went away for the holidays said she’s Going to l.a. but she never got there She never got there, she never got there, they say

The kkk took my baby away they took her away Away from me the kkk took my baby away They took her away away from me

Now I don’t know where my baby can be they Took her away from me they took her away from me I don’t know where my baby can be they took Her away from mr they took her away from me

Ring me, ring me, ring me up the president And finf out where my baby went Ring me, ring me, ring me up the fbi and find Out if baby’s alive yeah, yeah, yeah

O-o-o-o-o-o o-o-o-o-o-o She went away for holidays she went away for holidays

The kkk took my baby away the kkk took my baby away

They took my girl they took my baby away

This is getting depressing. So many of the great ones are passing away.

Johnny Cash.

Warren Zevon.

Now Johnny Ramone.

At least that Clay Aiken guy is still alive, right?

I was a slammer at City Gardens (aka Seedy Gardens) in Tren'on New Joisey back in the 80's. Saw many good bands there. Even saw Iggy Pop in the early 90's when he was trying a comeback and was actually polite. The time before that when he played there he got arrested for exposing himself on stage.
Saw The Cramps there, too, and many, many others. But I NEVER saw Sinbad O'Connor there, thankfully (though millions claim they did).
The Ramones were one of the best blasts. Sad to see these bands breaking apart. And too bad the current generation of alternative music has let their forebears down so badly. No where to dance anymore, especially in Seattle.

No, another conservative indie rocker here.

Hard to believe I bought the first album when I was 14. In 1976.
