(Providence, RI) -- All Rhode Island political candidates are being asked to participate in a questionnaire about their positions on a variety of issues. Project Vote Smart today begins administering its National Political Awareness Test to all Rhode Island state legislative and congressional candidates. The questionnaire covers topics such as abortion, taxes, campaign finance and government reform, crime, education, and affirmative action. The deadline for candidates to respond is October 13th. Project Vote Smart says since it began administering the test in the early 90's, there's been a steady decline in the number of candidates who are willing to provide their positions. The group suggests candidates want to control their campaign message by not taking stands on a broad range of issues.

RI politicians, unfortunately, have it right. If they don't say too much, most people will vote for them based on party affiliations or name recognition.

I have 3 more days to take my Project Vote Smart Survey. It is a billion questions and very time consuming. I took it in 2002 but seriously am thinking about ignoring it this time. They send me post cards and phone calls to remind me to fill it out and it's getting really annoying.

I understand. But, people need this information and sometimes, unfortunately, it's the only information they look at regarding the candidates. Can you just fill out some of it?

It takes at least an hour or more to fill out.

When you are running for office a spare hour is impossible. I am working on it but so few people look at it it's really not worth it.
