JG = Junior Grade. You are correct.
Navy Ensign = 2nd LT
Navy LT (jg) = 1st LT
Navy LT = Captain

In Kerry's case, it's Lt. J Effin G.

While we're talking about "official" documents, I'd like to know how Kerry became an officer. The only way I know of is either through ROTC while in college or through OCS. Did Kerry do either?

Kerry did do officer training before embarking on the Gridley. With a college degree in hand, it would not be unusual for an enlistee to become an officer or go to Officer Candidate School.

Ummm... Lieutenant JG is a RANK. Lieutenant Junior Grade. Or in the Army, Air Force and Marines, Second Lieutenant.

No offense intended but your question gives some insight into the problems of a nonmilitary group trying to gin up military documents; they just don't understand the lingo. We could just as easily argue that Bush was a first lieutenant while Kerry was only junior grade (still is) even though the ranks are equivalent.

Could someone transcribe the text? My eyes hurt trying to read THE ALL CAPS MONOSPACED TYPE FROM THIS OFFICIAL REPORT.
