THE LATEST FROM CBS AND ABC [09/14 07:41 PM]

My source familiar with the internal discussions at CBS describes the atmosphere at the network offices tonight as "madness" and "toxic". Apparently a real bunker mentality is setting in; there is reportedly a great deal of anger at ABC for running a scathing report about the memos.

I didn't see the ABC report (the CBS report was so shockingly false I needed smelling salts) , but apparently it was a humdinger. Here's a summary of each network from ABC:

ABC's Brian Ross interviewed the two experts who CBS hired to validate the National Guard documents and reports they ignored concerns they raised prior to the CBS News broadcast. "I did not feel that they wanted to investigate it very deeply," Emily Will told Ross. "I did not authenticate anything and I don't want it to be misunderstood that I did," Linda James told Ross. Ross reports 2 experts told ABC News today that even the most advanced typewriter available in 1972 could not have produced the documents. Ross also reported that Lt. Col. Jerry Killian's secretary says she believes the documents are fake but that they express thoughts Killian believed. In the "Inside Story" on the CBS "Evening News," John Roberts said that CBS "continues to stand by its reporting" on Bush's National Guard records. Roberts derisively said Bush "barely mentioned his service" today while appearing before the Guard association. Roberts closed by saying that Bush's goal is to turn the focus of the debate away from the questions to "those asking them."

The next big question: How do the major papers treat CBS' report tonight? And when do we start to see the first non-conservative editorials and columns ripping the network?

I've been poking around to find if Abc has it in for Dan Rather.

I thought this 1997 article was interesting.

CBS has become everything they used to hate.

Always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty; always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.

If Dan Rather implicates the DNC in the memo fraud, the danger to him may extend well beyond simple career considerations.

''Rather is sitting in third place,'' Frank said. ''Why (Brokaw) bothered to respond, I don't know. When you're in first place, you say, 'Yeah, so?' ''

There is no love lost between ABC, CBS and NBC News.

But, if anything, both ABC and NBC probably take more pleasure in pissing on Dan than they do on each other.

You found a 1997 article from an Ardmore, Oklahoma daily? How quaint...

Roberts is another nasty snake IMHO. I've heard him as a guest on one of the talk radio shows, an he was the typical, arrogant, media liberal. I think he is considered the favorite to take over after Dan leaves, which may be very soon.

Has Dan popped the question to Eva Braun yet?

It sounded pretty bad for CBS on the one we watched. They torpedoed the memo (what else could they do or look foolish?) but, true to form, at the very end said that Killian's secretary said memo was probably fake, BUT that if it hadn't been fake it would have expressed how SHE thought Killian felt about Pres. Bush. HOWEVER, on radio the other day, Killian's son said that his father had admired Pres. Bush when he was his commander. He also had met Dubya and said he was exemplary in appearance and demeanor. So, they're probably trying to wound Rather and not be fatal to CBS. Just not look stupid themselves.

'If a reporter can tie the DNC and Kerry to the forgeries this could be BIGGER THAN THE WATERGATE BREAK INS!

Think about it. It has all of the elements, dirt tricks, illegal activity, a desperate political campaign, and CONSPIRACIES CONSPIRACIES CONSPIRACIES!'

"The Manchurian Candidate".

I dreaded that movie coming out, because I thought it would be anti-Bush...but it turns out, it seems to have overtones of Shallow John and SHillary, and IMO is worth the price of admission.

Viacom has a fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders. If ratings, revenue and share price take a plunge after this, Viacom can be made to pay big.'

Pay WHO big, their millions of stockholders, if said stockholders aren't protected from financial loss? Tell me more, I am composing a letter....

I am shamelessly posting this everywhere.

Sung to the tune of "Video Killed the Radio Star." What do you think? Perhaps Rush could work it up?

I saw you on the airwaves back in Sixty-Three.
Lying in wait intent on making history.
I was so young I couldn't stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh
You couldn't wait to replace that old phony.
Abusing airwaves was a lib monopoly.
And now I understand the problems you can't see.
Oh-a oh
Come meet your children.
Oh-a oh
They're here to tell you.
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
The bloggers came and broke your heart.
Oh-a-a-a oh
And now you race to an abandoned studio.
To face the payback that we wanted long ago.
And you remember how you liberals used to crow.
Oh-a oh
You are the first one.
Oh-a oh
But not the last one.
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
In my mind and on my Mac, we can't delete we won't go back.
Oh-a-aho oh,
Oh-a-aho oh
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
Internet killed the CBS star . . .
In my mind and on my Mac, we can't delete we won't go back.
The truth has come through cyberspace. Google monkeys took your place.
You are a CBS star.
You are a CBS star.
Internet killed the CBS star.
Internet killed the CBS star.
Internet killed the CBS star.
Internet killed the CBS star.
repeat

'I think lots of people could sue. Even better, we should find out how to file complaints against our local CBS affiliates with the FCC.'

(from another FReeper)
Write a nice letter to the general manager of your local cbs affiliate. explain that you have determined that falsehoods included in cbs network news programs broadcast by the station are not in the public interest.. explain that you believe that this is something that should be taken into consideration when their license comes up for renewal. close the letter by saying that you therefore request that this letter be placed in the station's public file.

these are powerful code words. "not in the public interest" is the grounds for challenging a license. the "public file" is a file of consumer comments which the station by law must maintain. it is provided to and inspected by the f.c.c.

if you want to be really mean cc the letter to:

Federal Communications Commission
Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau
Consumer Complaints
445 12th Street, SW
Washington, D.C. 20554

believe me, enough of these and cbs will hear about it bigtime. angry affils are the last thing a network wants.

'If Dan Rather gets fired and 60 Minutes tanks, that doesn't necessarily harm CBS all that much. And CBS is only a part of Viacom'

If we continue to point out that once again EVIL Viacom is not doing the right thing (murderous prisoners band on TV, Janet Jackson, etc.,)and will allow their businesses to become PROVEN assets of the DNC, then I would assume their stocks would fall...

if Rather got fired, that might make their stock take off!! Might be a signal that the old red eye has turned around...Viacom/Visine?

Evidently they, via John Roberts, are attempting to drag Bush into this, as a behind the scenes player. More falsehood, will they never get it? That kind of ploy is no longer going to work for them. Implication without representation of facts is just going to bring more shame and embarrassment to CBS. Their appalling spin and denials is turning into slap stick comedy worthy of the movie "Network" where the insane seems sane in comparison to the rest of the smucks working there.

Bush is not the one who raised the document question, he has zero to do with it. If he benefits from it in anyway, it will be that the major news media cannot get away with lies and distortions, we all benefit from that.

I'm taking ABC off my boycott list. They stepped up to the plate and I'll give them a chance to just report the facts, real facts, without their interpretation of what it all means.

For too long the media has stroked themselves that middle America is dumb, instead of realizing the truth, middle America has outgrown them and the news media has a lot of catching up to do.
