GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) A man threw his fiancée's eight-month-old daughter out of a car as he fled police after being accused of domestic violence, authorities said. The girl, strapped in a car seat, was unhurt but the man later was fatally injured in a crash.
Dana Bettin, 23, died Sunday, three days after the dramatic highway chase that ended when he crashed his fiancée's car into an unoccupied squad car.
At one point, he slowed down, opened the car door and dropped the baby in the car seat onto the highway, sending the seat tumbling toward the middle of the roadway.
"As the baby was flying toward me I noticed that she was crying very hard and looked scared," Wisconsin State Patrol Sgt. David Catalano said Tuesday on NBC's Today show, which aired video of the incident.
"Fortunately she was seat-belted into the child seat so that as it slid forward on the highway and then rolled over she escaped without any injuries," he said.
Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Pamenter told The Post-Crescent in Appleton that the man at first tried to put the baby out of the car on the shoulder, but the car door was in his way. He eventually pulled back into traffic and pushed the baby out as he was accelerating.
"His car was jerking back and forth," Pamenter said. "I didn't know what he was doing. He seemed to care for the baby."
The chase continued at speeds up to 160 kilometres an hour.
The pursuit ended on U.S. 41 when Bettin had a minor collision with a vehicle and then crashed into an unoccupied squad car. The car he was driving rolled over and he was pinned underneath. He died at a hospital in Green Bay.
Catalano spoke to the baby's mother on Monday and said the girl is going fine.
"Her mother is very devastated about everything right now," he said. "It was her fiance involved and she's very upset."

The video scared me to death. I was sure the cop car was going to hit the baby.

I saw that video too. Made me sick. At first glance, I was sure that the baby would be dead or badly maimed. Psycho. Had he not tossed the baby, (she? or he?) might have also been killed when he later flipped the car and died.

. . . but the man later was fatally injured in a crash. If I had been the first cop on the scene and he were still alive, it would've been REAL HARD not to help him along on his way to Hell with some power thumps to his head. Don't know how those guys contain themselves sometimes.

"Good God! The Sexual Revolution strikes yet again."
Yes. Oh, the victimology!
If we could only socially engineer humans to take what goes on without getting upset, "sexual freedom" will have arrived. We should keep trying. Several million more deaths down the road of time in the war between the sexes (contemporary: "gender gap"), and we should find a way to neutralize those emotions. And whatever we do, we must not allow the words of Solomon to his son get out. If the moralistic, misogonistic males find out that we've been trying to facilitate and accomodate adultery...er, sexual freedom for thousands of years, we're finished.
...little sarcasm and irony there.

I'm really glad that the baby lived, but there are other underlying serious issues involved. Our paradigm of "relationships" causes a lot of pretty knarled-up consequences.

Whatever that means. It means about 100MPH (just multiply KPH by .6 to get an approximation of MPH.)

Not to minimize what the scumbag did, but as I noted in the first thread, the driver actually slowed to nearly a stop and set the baby down in its car seat. It didn't even roll over, just tipped to one side. The police officer behind the baby would have had to have amazing eyesight to see the baby's face, since it was set down facing ahead of the cops.
Bizarre story, but it must be a slow news day because I keep seeing this on every news show. Normally, we don't get this kind of attention up here in Cheese Land.
