The former secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel who supposedly authored memos critical of President Bush’s Guard service said Tuesday that the documents are fake, but that they reflect real documents that once existed.

Translation: We're too stupid to produce convincing forgeries, but these say what we would say if we could.

Forgeries, but genuine forgeries? Not.

> ... they reflect real documents that once existed.

This cannot be literally true, due to the time/place/date
problems, defective terminology/abbreviations/regs, etc.

> ... said she is not a supporter of Mr. Bush, ...

They needed to hire her BEFORE the creative fiction began.

Anyhow, this means that hunt'n'peck Killian would have
had to type the memos himself on that mythical IBM
Selectric Composer with top-secret Pseudo-Kerning option.

It will be fun to see how Rather spins this mixed bag
of news.

The Democrats don't care that they're forgeries. They aren't interested in the forgeries reflecting pre-existing documents. These forgeries are just a set-up.

They are using this scam as a springboard to further attack Bush's service in the Guard. "Sure the documents are fakes, but what about the issues they raise?"

HOUSTON – The former secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel who supposedly authored memos critical of President Bush’s Guard service said Tuesday that the documents are fake, but that they reflect real documents that once existed.

How bleeping convenient.

This "poor" partisan woman has to fess up to the techncially obvious, but then gives CBS some slim threads to hang on to.

At least the DMN had the decency to note the partisanship:

Mrs. Knox, 86, who spoke with precise recollection about dates, people and events, said she is not a supporter of Mr. Bush, who she deemed “unfit for office” and “selected, not elected.”

Of course, with bloggers looking over their shoulders, do they have a choice? (nyuk, nyuk).

But despite what she says, there remains for CBS an insurmountable challenge: PROVE IT.

"The information in here was correct, but it was picked up from the real ones,” she said.

She said that the culture of the time was that men didn’t type office-related documents, and she expressed doubt that Lt. Col. Killian would have typed the memos. She said she would typically type his memos from his handwritten notes, which she would then destroy.

Mrs. Knox, who left the Guard before Lt. Col. Killian died, said she was not sure of the disposition of his personal files when he died while still serving at Ellington. But, she said, it would have been logical that a master sergeant who worked in the squadron headquarters would have destroyed any such nonofficial documents after Lt. Col. Killian’s death.

That man, reached Tuesday, declined to comment. “I don’t know anything about the matter,” he said.

She also said the memos may have been constructed from memory by someone who had seen Lt. Col. Killian’s private file but were not transcriptions because the language and terminology did not match what he would have used.

For instance, she said, the use of the words “billets” and a reference to the “administrative officer” of Mr. Bush’s squadron reflect Army terminology rather than the Air National Guard. Some news reports attribute the CBS reports to a former Army National Guard officer who has a longstanding dispute with the Guard and has previously maintained that the president’s record was sanitized.

Mrs. Knox also cited stylistic differences in the form of the notes, such as the signature on the right side of the document, rather than the left, where she would have put it.

This woman sounds confused, to me.

No, it was designed to be a diversion from the third anniversary of 9/11, which the Democrats knew would be a political bonanza for President Bush and futher bury Kerry. Dan Rather cut corners and sped up this story so it would air right before September 11. They thought Bush would be spending the weekend defending himself; instead, it was Dan Rather spending the weekend defending himself!!!

I think someone should ask her if anyone from the DNC or CBS contacted her in the past regarding her recollection of these matters. This could be the "source" upon which the forged documents idea came about. It all hangs on a crazy granny. Making us pyjama types look absolutely mainstream in comparison.

What is most tragic about all this crap is the effect it is having on the Killian family, just innocent American nobodies (until now) being used by the DNC. I can just imagine how I would feel if suddenly my deceased dad and my family name were thrown into the limelight of the entire world claiming my dad had done something that he never would have considered.

IMHO, Lt. Col. Killian's family should get an attorney and sue the heck out of CBS......

It's hard to believe they are as stupid as they appear to be.

Obviously some kind of misdirection. Its got me pretty spooked actually. I don't think it has anything to do with taking the focus off of Kerry's Senate record. Still have to believe it is all Hitlery related.

The more I think about this national guard forgery stuff the more I think that this is designed to be a DIVERSION from Kerry's senate record and Kerry himself.

Right. It's the 3rd quarter, they're down by 11, and they're playing PREVENT DEFENSE.

What the hell is she talking about? She hates Bush but says the docs are absolute forgeries. Then she says they "reflect" the real ones and are consistent with Killian's thinking, but she can't say if they match any real documents "memo for memo."

So explain to me where she's been all these years, and why the story only quotes her in generalities about Bush and the "actual memos"? How come there are no direct quotes of her saying Bush's record was sugar coated, pressure from the top, etc.? Very strange article.

Great point about the lack of quotes about whether they existed at the time.

Get an affidavit (of course a Dem partisan signing an affidavit means nothing).

This reflects exactly the staff gossip floated in the Prowler about CBS reporters hearing rumors of these docs for years, then being surprised when they magically appeared--made to order evidence. Unfortunately for Dan the Newsman, simulations of purported documents do not cut it. Reminds me of those cheezy re-enactments on "Unsolved Mysteries."
