Former secretary says she didn't type memos 04:10 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 14, 2004

By PETE SLOVER / The Dallas Morning News

HOUSTON – The former secretary for the Texas Air National Guard colonel who supposedly authored memos critical of President Bush’s Guard service said Tuesday that the documents are fake, but that they reflect real documents that once existed.

Marian Carr Knox, who worked from 1956 to 1979 at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, said she prided herself on meticulous typing, and the memos first disclosed by CBS News last week were not her work.

“These are not real,” she told The Dallas Morning News after examining copies of the disputed memos for the first time. “They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.”

Mrs. Knox, 86, who spoke with precise recollection about dates, people and events, said she is not a supporter of Mr. Bush, who she deemed “unfit for office” and “selected, not elected.”

“I remember very vividly when Bush was there and all the yak-yak that was going on about it,” she said.

So do authentic Killian documents.

Believe me, this woman did not help Dan Rather one little bit.

What I mean is, they are going to use her little story to try to invalidate all argument regarding the memos being forged. CBS and Dan Blather, while denying the memos are faked, have consistently said that even if they are forged, the questions about Bush's service need to be answered.

That is exactly where they are going to go with this; this secretary saying they are faked but reflect real documents gives them a way to dodge the forgery issue and just keep on saying Bush was smoking crack and beating his wife instead of serving in the Guard while JFnK was saving the world from evil bad guys in Vietnam.

Sorry, this paragraph should also have been in blockquotes:

She also said the memos may have been constructed from memory by someone who had seen Lt. Col. Killian’s private file but were not transcriptions because the language and terminology did not match what he would have used. For instance, she said, the use of the words “billets” and a reference to the “administrative officer” of Mr. Bush’s squadron reflect Army terminology rather than the Air National Guard. Some news reports attribute the CBS reports to a former Army National Guard officer who has a longstanding dispute with the Guard and has previously maintained that the president’s record was sanitized. Mrs. Knox also cited stylistic differences in the form of the notes, such as the signature on the right side of the document, rather than the left, where she would have put it.

Now, notice that earlier she said that she did not recall typing these memos, but that they reflected Killian's thinking. Why does she believe that? No basis for this is given (other than her obvious animosity to Bush) She then suggests the were done by someone who'd seen Killian's file.

OK, but if there were memos (without the obvious mistakes she finds in these) in Killian's file which she didnt' type, and she typed all of his memos, then who typed the now missing real memos?????

Bottom line: I suspect she really was the secretary and did all of Killian's typing, but when carefully examined it would be clear she has no memory about the actual files or documents that hasn't been recently refreshed by someone connected with CBS, the Democratic Party or the Kerry campaign.

You know how CBS will spin this.

[Dan Rather]

Good Evening. A major breakthrough today regarding those memos obtained by CBS which say, during the time of his Nat'l Guard service, George W. Bush was a Daddy's pet, a deserter, and the subject of vivid office yak-yak. According to the Dallas Morning News...

Marian Carr Knox, the secretary to Lt. Colonel Jerry Killian said today:

[graphics on screen]

--her typewriter "had a key with the 'th' superscript character

--the memos "accurately reflect the viewpoints of Lt. Col. Killian and documents that would have been in [his]personal file". She said he did keep a personal file.

--Mrs. Knox, who left the Guard before Lt. Col. Killian died, said she was not sure of the disposition of his personal files when he died while still serving at Ellington.

There ya go. Every bit of it is in the article. So Dan can say it's TRUE!

Ummm . . . Who can remember ANYTHING they typed 30 years ago? I certainly can't (which isn't to say someone else couldn't). But COME ON . . . She's 86!

Dan, you're screwed!

Dan doesn't care. He'll be back on tomorrow, lying about something new.

Brazenly. Like a hooker, only with less honor.

its not the nature of the evidence, its the seriousness of the charge.

Unless the serious charge is that a Network Anchor is fabricating news.

So? They produced forgeries and the only documents in which new allegations were made against Bush are IN these forgeries. The man's own wife and son have stated Killian was a fan of Bush, while she has repeated the Leftist mantra "selected not elected".

The burden of proof is on THEM to produce authetic documentation such memoes existed, and after the forgeries, scepticism is going to follow their every statement.

She's an asset for Bush, imo. She states they are forgeries, and she repeats the same Moore mantra that turns off 2/3rd's of this country. I want Rather to feature her tonight. They'll only make themselves appear worse in the aftermath.

Someone needs to check the date she retired to determine if the forged memos came after that.

“I remember very vividly when Bush was there and all the yak-yak that was going on about it,” she said."

I'm skeptical of this. This was years before Bush Sr was even Veep, and Bush Jr wouldn't have been nearly as high-profile a figure as he would have been in later years. I don't think his presence would have caused a stir; he would have been just another well-off kid, not a guy to turn heads and have people say, "Look who just came in the door."
