The Unknown Kerry

Liberty Beat by Nat Hentoff The Unknown Kerry Could he sink all his swift boat enemies if he released all his Vietnam records? September 13th, 2004 5:35 PM

What is he hiding? (photo: Holly Northrop/hnorthrop.com)

I am absolutely telling you the God's honest truth about what happened and what took place over there [in Vietnam]. — John Kerry The New York Sun, August 27–29

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an August editorial, The New York Times declared, "No one has offered evidence to contradict the record" of Kerry's war service. In the September 6 New Yorker, Hendrik Hertzberg advises us that "the plausibility of each accusation against Kerry has evaporated in the bright light of the existing record, the official documents of the Navy . . . "

In the mainstream media, only a few reporters—among them Michael Dobbs in The Washington Post and Thomas Lipscomb, writing in the Chicago Sun-Times and other papers—have actually tried to get the entire record of John Kerry's service in Vietnam. His widely acclaimed acceptance speech at the Democratic convention in Boston insistently focused on those four months while devoting only about 40 seconds to his 20 years in the Senate.

Continually, Kerry's spokespeople have been emphasizing in the media that all his service records are on his website. But deep in a long, front-page story in the August 22 Washington Post—"Swift Boat Accounts Incomplete; Critics Fail to Disprove Kerry's Version of Vietnam War Episode"—Michael Dobbs raised the question of why Kerry has been hiding considerable parts of his Vietnam record.

Hentoff is a liberal, but he's not a postmodern liberal who thinks that truth is relative. And he's not afraid to say he's pro-life.

I wish President Bush would hold a press conference and PUBLICLY SIGN A 180!!

even if it is symbolic

no need to mention Kerry, just say it is for the public good

Whatever John the Waffler thought the truth was on August 27-29, you can bet that on August 26, he said that the opposite was true, and that he will come to yet another, utterly irreconcileable conclusion on August 30.

What can be done to force Kerry to sign that darn form 180? Surely there is some kind of pressure that can be put on him or pressure on the media to put pressure on him.

Here's what's amazing, in the Swiftboat book near the last chapter Mr. O'Neil writes that Kerry's campaign in (74? or 94?) used the same tactics. First , no one was allowed to ask questions of kerry or else they would cry that you were attacking his patriotism .Second they would attack his opponents war record or lack of service. Any of this sound familiar. Come on hannity, WAKE UP!

Here is one of Hentoff's articles from March 28, 2003. Gives an insight on his thinking process.

Nat Hentoff
Why I Didn't March This Time
Their Tongues Were Cut Out for Slandering Hussein

I participated in many demonstrations against the Vietnam War, including some civil disobedience—though I was careful not to catch the eyes of the cops, sometimes a way of not getting arrested. But I could not participate in the demonstrations against the war on Iraq. As I told The New York Sun in its March 14-16 roundup of New Yorkers for and against the war:

"There was the disclosure . . . when the prisons were briefly opened of the gouging of eyes of prisoners and the raping of women in front of their husbands, from whom the torturers wanted to extract information. . . . So if people want to talk about containing [Saddam Hussein] and don't want to go in forcefully and remove him, how do they propose doing something about the horrors he is inflicting on his people who live in such fear of him?"

I did not cite "weapons of mass destruction." Nor do I believe Saddam Hussein is a direct threat to this country, any more than the creators of the mass graves in the Balkans were, or the Taliban. And as has been evident for a long time, I am no admirer of George W. Bush.

Come on Kerry, it's seared in your memory that you were in Cambodia! So how are we to believe any alleged recollection you have of that time?

An explaination of what a 180 is and why Kerry hasn't signed it would be effective in damaging Kerry while supporting the Vets rightful claim of "truth".

however, i am worried. I am worried about the roper-dope. can anyone [especially a sitting Senator] really be this stupid? (well he is from Mass, but even so) Every day is another fiasco for Kerry.

i don't know but am advising circumspection...they may have shifted and now want to make him so unelectable that they can pull someone from the wings. Let's think about the unthinkable.

Nothing.

It would be tantamount to an unconditional surrender of his campaign.

.
Forget Vietnam. Forget Form 180.

More important what he did in the Senate. More important what he did in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. More important what he did in Nicaragua, the Philippines, and in post-war Vietnam with the POW/MIA issue. He fought against this country every step of the way.

And of course, the VVAW.
