My Credit card was just billed by Moveon.org

Hey, I ain't one to promulgate conspiracy theories, but here's a story for ya. I'm sorry if this strikes some as wasted bandwidth, but I thought a heads up was in order.

Someone got hold of my ATM card number this weekend and, after an espresso stop at a Singapore Cafe and a bus ticket purchase in Chile, made a $5.00 donation to Moveon.org.

I'm not sure whether to laugh about the irony or fret over the insidiousness of leftist politics.

Keep an eye on your bank records, folks, and pray that the guy who steals your credit card number finds it in his or her heart to at least donate some of the booty to the Swift Vets.

VERY IMPORTANT: Credit cards have a great deal more consumer protection than ATM or debit cards. You are liable for only $50 if your credit card is stolen and misused. Your entire bank balance is at risk if your ATM or debit card is stolen and misused. Consumer credit laws have not caught up with technology. Most banks will make you whole if your ATM card or debit card are stolen and misused, but they are not legally obligated to do so.

I never sent them a dime; I've never been to their site because I'd vomit, and don't want them to know my IP address. Methinks that they're trolling, and I didn't bite. I haven't a clue on how they got my email address. Something's smells very fishy, like Ole Crusty...

t took us 2 years to clear up the mess after I experienced identity theft.

A relative stopped some ID thefters in the act, before they were able to do any serious damage. Closed a bank account, filed police reports.

Several days later they struck, tried to do an ACH withdrawl against the bank account. Nothing there.

As if that weren't enough, 6 months later a new ID thefter called *this time with the bank account numbers* and trying to get some updated info. My relative started laughing at him, then called the police.

Apparently these people pass info around within their criminal enterprise.

Correct. While overseas, an ATM dinged me for about $200.00 which it didn't deliver, and then went out of service a few minutes later (a Citibank machine in a third world country).

It took 6 months and many calls to get the money back.

Someone got ahold of my credit card and charged a subscription to the "Girls Gone Wild" web site. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I had no idea Bill Clinton lurked around on this site.

We don't use ATMs because I can't keep track of withdrawals and it caused me a big problem once. I kept getting over drawn notices from the bank and thought that I was making ATM withdrawal and forgetting to deduct. It went on for about six months, I thought that I was losing it and finally closed the account, at which time the teller informed my husband that the bank had discovered that another woman with the same name had been making withdrawals from my acct, using blank withdrawal slips. The same woman was also renting videos in my name and using the health insurance of another woman in town with the same name.

I would also suggest you file a police report.

While that may seem a bit drastic to some. If your ID has been stolen, you may not discover the full extent until YEARS later.

This is particularly true if the thieves have obtained credit cards with a false adress. Years after they have long disappeared you may be surprised with a lawsuit.

With the police report you will be able to provide this as evidence that you do not owe the debt and that your ID was stollen. This is not the end all be all, but it does have the necessary element of establishing diligence on your part when you have no further information.

I've been flooded with send-money mail ever since I contributed to the Swift Vets.

The SwiftVets have not shared your email address with anyone. They do not rent, sell, loan, or share the email addresses of contributors with anyone.

I've heard thiefs are using "Picture Cell Phones" to take a picture of your Credit Card at Registers and using that information !!!

Be careful out there.

I no longer order anything on line with my check card. I also look at all amounts on my bank statements (available on line for me) every couple of days, and match them up.

We got to complacent and it bit us in the A**

I wasn't clear-I was referring to snail mail. I sincerely hope it wasn't the Swift Vets selling my name and address, as so many others do.
