Politicians pander to people who vote, not to people who don't. People who vote in large blocs tend to get what they want, right or wrong. The federal bureaucracy and liberal establish do not have power in and of themselves, they have the power bestowed by voters who think it's someone else's responsibility to take care of them.

As someone who will retire in a few years, I don't really care if they do away with the social security system altogether. It has become nothing but a slush fund for greedy bureaucrats. I would rather die hungry than see this country continue to slide toward socialism.

And they don't just pander to retirees. Other people belly up to the public trough like welfare mothers, People with low income (earned income tax "credit"), government "environmental" scientists, tort lawyers, etc, etc.
