That is really not the point here, is it?

It doesn't really matter whether Dan "knowingly defended" himself "againt something he knew not to be the case".

The job of a person paid in excess of $7 million a year to report the news to the people of the United States is to do all he can to ensure the accuracy of the information he gives out.

Dan didn't do that.

He failed basic journalism.

And, after all of the expert witnesses agreeing that the memos are forgeries, he's still defending them.
