I am not sure. I am not sure if I even want him to. In essence, he would be putting his election at risk to win a longer term issue.
But that said, for all the times Rather has used the word 'Courage', this President has it. He has political courage like I have never seen before...not even Reagan had this much. Afghanistan was politically risky...Iraq was a political loser, but the right thing to do. He originally campaigned by not only touching, but grabbing the third rail of politics, SS reform. Rather may say courage a lot more often then President Bush, but President Bush has more of it than any major figure I can think of. I am not sure that he will deem it wise to do so, but if he does, you can bet President Bush has the courage to follow through.

I agree with you. It's clear from Kellyanne Fitzpatrick, on Fox this a.m., that the "message" that's out there is "health care." Why? Because Bush KNOWS the MSM is going to continue raising this story by not raising it---that is, so long as they ignore it, it remains a KEY ISSUE in the campaign. Any mention of Vietnam, however oblique or subliminal favors Bush.
I can't say that enough: ANY mention of Vietnam, however subliminal or oblique, favors Bush, because Francois has based his entire campaign on Iraq/WOT-by-proxy of Vietnam. He has no other issue. Bush knows this.

"My prediction: Bush will not attack."
If the press askes Bush to defend what was written in the memos, my bet is he'll say "The memos are fake".

Bush shouldn't attack.
He should just make a little jest about it. Play it for a small laugh, a chuckle to be enjoyed and forgotten about .
Rath has a Texas-sized grudge against the Bushes that he has indulged many times in public, and in Austin. I wouldn't blame GW a bit if he directed a funny little jab Danny's way.

There is no reason to attack. This story has one purpose: to force W to deny the charges. Then, the Old Media could make W's denial the story and pick it apart letter-by-letter.
W can go about his business as POTUS and getting re-elected. The bloggers and increasingly, the majority of what is left of the credible media, will take CBS down along w/this bogus story.
This isn't going to end. They are setting up the scenario for the next 4 years of attacking the POTUS and threatening impeachment every chance they get. We have several more election cycles ahead where diminishing the power of the Donks is going to have to be the main agenda.
Yesterday I spoke with an Evangelical very active in her faith and in her church. She knows no one who is going to buy any smears against W this time around. People are turning off their TVs and not listening to the slime. Most of them are very aware that they were rolled on the DUI in 2000. "Fool me once........."
