Journalist killed on camera
Sunday Times ^

Posted on 09/13/2004 10:35:43 AM PDT by billbirmingham

A PALESTINIAN television journalist was killed today as he was giving a live report to camera on deadly clashes between US forces and insurgents in the heart of the Iraqi capital.

Residents of his home town in the West Bank watched in horror as Mazen al-Tomaisi, who worked for Saudi television Akhbariya and for the pan-Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya, went down.

Mr Tomaisi, 28, was killed when a US helicopter fired missiles on a mob which had gathered round a US tank in Baghdad that had been set ablaze in a car bomb attack, one of a string of bombings across the capital today.

Blood spattered across the cameraman's lens and screams were heard by viewers of the Al-Arabiya report.

Mr Tomaisi, from the West Bank town of Idna, is the fourth Palestinian journalist killed in Iraq.

An Iraqi cameraman and an Iraqi photographer were also slightly wounded by flying shrapnel during the attack.

An Iraqi official later said a total of 13 people were killed, including two children, and 55 were wounded during the battle in Haifa Street, a suspected bastion of Saddam Hussein loyalists, where insurgents and US troops clash regularly

1) He was a journalist. That he was a Palestinian doesn't make him any less a journalist.

He was not a journalist. He was a propagandist working for a Saudi propaganda outlet.

Not all Palestinians are terrorists.

Not all Germans were nazis either.

2) He was there at the same time as British journalists, European journalists, and American journalists.

There were no American journalists celebrating at the car swarm.

3) Equating Islam automatically with terrorism is bigotry, sort of like equating all good Southern Baptists with KKK lynch-mongers.

I don't remember good Southern Baptists ever cheering and dancing whenever the KKK performs a lynching.

4) Yes, he died in a war zone, and yes, that's a risk one runs when reporting a war from the zone. His death is tragic. But to cheer for it, and celebrate it, almost makes me want to join the Kerry crowd. At least none of them will be cheering his death.

No, they cheer the deaths of American soldiers and innocent Israeli civilians.

I don't feel sorry for any of those people celebrating on our Bradley Fighting Vehicle

Morons.

But you know what? I'm guessing these morons were not terrorists- who probably took off at once- but just Iraqi street rabble doing what rabble does best. But that is another story.

Irish terrorists who, calling themselves Catholics or Protestants, kill in the name of their God...

IRA Terrorists don't kill in the name of God.

They kill, they are wrong, they are scum, but they aren't incited from the pulpit on Sunday and they don't consider killing an expression of thier religious beliefs. I doubt the average IRA soldier is even very religious at all.

I entertained this kind of moral equivalence before the kids were slaughtered in Russia. Now I understand we are at war with radical Islam and innocent people will occasionally die as they did in Dresden and Tokyo. I can live with it.

1) He was a journalist. That he was a Palestinian doesn't make him any less a journalist. Not all Palestinians are terrorists. Many are just trying to survive in a place where they are treated like untermenschen by an occupying army.

So, he was carrying the weight of decades of Israeli "occupation" on his back and therefore we should give him a break?

3) Equating Islam automatically with terrorism is bigotry, sort of like equating all good Southern Baptists with KKK lynch-mongers. It's wrong and it's offensive, and most conservatives know better.

When Swedish grandmothers start beheading defenseless truck drivers, raping children, killing hundreds of schoolkids, slitting the throats of stewardesses, blowing up pizza parlors with screw-laced bombs, and hijacking jets and fly them into buildings ... then, and only then, I'll be prejudiced against them.

4) Yes, he died in a war zone, and yes, that's a risk one runs when reporting a war from the zone. His death is tragic. But to cheer for it, and celebrate it, almost makes me want to join the Kerry crowd. At least none of them will be cheering his death.

Yeah, they only cheer when Americans get killed. Stop by DU and see the crowd you're considering joining. Plus, I don't see any chains binding you to Free Republic or the Republican party.

bbc has a cool video of a terrorist journalist getting killed by the blast as he's filming the celebrations:

Anyone who thinks it's "cool" to watch someone get killed is an imbecile or a future serial murderer. Which are you?

You are a disgrace to this site.

Well, I don't think it is cool at all to see someone get killed, actually I think it is sad, but I don't think just cause me or anyone else wants to see the video means we are future serial killers.

Don't know if I'm a future mass murderer - how many people do I have to kill before I qualify?

The Bradley vehicle had been disabled by a car bomb. The crew escaped, injured but alive. The disabled Bradley was destroyed by the helicopters to prevent its ammunition and other contents from being taken by the scavengers who descend on scenes like this. First reports indicated none of the crews' injuries were considered life threatening, at least not as life threatening as being attacked by US military helicopter.

The person who posted that said it was cool. It's not. Only a sick mind works that way.

Why do you want to see it?

I don't know. But if you want to keep from qualifing make it the right one first if ya know what I mean. Then there won't be a second one.

Unfortunately we did not establish that policy early on but it is never too late:

Aproaching US military vehicles (damaged or not) is hazardous to your health.
Anyone found dancing in the vicinity of a vehicle will be treated as an ennemy combatant too stupid to live and will be killed.
Al Jazzera would have lost hours of entertainment.

You know frankly, I don't care if I see it or not, I was informing that the link to see it doesn't work. I did try and look at it, but if I don't see it I won't loose sleep over it. But who cares, people like to see things like this, doesn't make them sick or demented.

Yes it does. People like to see kiddy porn too, so by your argument they aren't sick or demented. People like to see snuff films, are they normal?

You better rethink your desires.
