For those not current with psychiatric drugs, Lithium is first line drug for manic/depressive illness.
Manic phase is usually characterized by florid, extravagant behavior usually characterized by extremely poor decision making..excessive activity, insomnia, excessive spending, etc
The Depressive stage looks like severe depression , with inability to make any decisions, poor personal hygiene, feelings of worthlessness etc.
