Rather Defends Memos...But

By Staff -- Broadcasting & Cable, 9/12/2004 11:00:00 PM

Dan Rather tol B&C Friday he believes documents used in a controversial 60 Minutes story were “authentic,” but did open the door to the possibility he’d been duped.

The memos allege a young George W. Bush received preferential treatment when he was in the National Guard during the Vietnam War. Rather, who was the correspondent, says, “Document analysis isn’t a pure science. It’s not fingerprints or DNA. It’s a very crude art. You have one expert testifying one thing and one another.”

But neither Rather nor CBS News was backing down. “Unless someone shows us definitive proof that the documents are not authentic, then we don’t see any reason to carry on a conversation with the professional rumor mill.” Some experts say the memos use a font and have other characteristics that weren’t available on typewriters in 1972.

Rather says the memos alone were not enough to substantiate charges made in the piece but noted that CBS also presented witnesses who knew the memos’ author, the late Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, and were familiar with his views.

“The questions raised in the report about then-Lieutenant Bush are serious and legitimate,” says Rather. “Did a wealthy Texas oilman go to the Texas Speaker of the House and ask for preferential treatment? Did Bush refuse a direct order from his military superior, and was he suspended for not meeting the standards of the Air Force?”

When the time comes for Rather to retire, people will remember him mainly for his involvement in a clumsy effort to sabotage a sitting President. Nice job Dan. Ya sap. And happy retirement - NOT!

Unless someone shows us definitive proof that the documents are not authentic

Hey Dan, you presented the documents, the burden of proof is on you to prove that they're authentic.

The definitive proof that the docs are fake, apart from the testimony of the alleged author's wife and son, is that they exactly replicate a technology THAT WAS NOT INVENTED UNTIL 10 YEARS LATER (TrueTypeTM)

It is like, so over for you Dan.

Dan is no longer a newsman, if he ever was one. That one sentence clinches it.

What was the name of the idiot newscaster on the Mary Tyler Moore Show? Ted Baxter or was it Ted Knight? Rather must be who inspired the writers of that show to come up with such a character.

Dan Rather has been sucker punched by the same people that let Monica hang out to dry when she was of no further use. He (Rather) is an admitted Dem fundraiser on behalf of his daughter in Texas, has a long-standing hatred of the elder Bush, and even congratulated Schrom after the Kerry "reporting for duty" screeech at the DNC convention. He deserves everything he's getting and his hoarse voice is proof of that. This is absolute evidence that not being a straight shooter comes back to bite. Rather's best gift to the conservatives is that he has hammered a big nail in the coffin of the main stream media. Good work, Danno!

Note that Rather insists on hurling Kerry talking points questions at Bush, saying that is all that matters. Rather cares little about whether he presented false evidence to the entire nation.

And who is Rather kidding, himself? He asks if a "wealthy Texas oilman" helped Bush get in the Guard. Rather knows the witness he presented is a vice chair of the Kerry campaign who previously testified under oath that he did NOT help Bush, and whose own daughter says is lying. And Rather still thinks the only important question is that Bush should answer the charges?

Face it, Dan. You're out of your league. You should've stuck to exposing owners of used car lots who roll back odometers.

Actually it was Jerry Dunphy of LA who Ted Baxter was patterned after........but Rather will do just fine too!

“Unless someone shows us definitive proof that the documents are not authentic, then we don’t see any reason to carry on a conversation with the professional rumor mill.”

What is a "professional rumor mill?" After all, I thought bloggers were amateurs (though Drudge is a pro). But what is a "rumor mill?" It would be an entity that spreads rumors. What is a "rumor"--it is a conjecture or assertion not backed by facts on hand, but spread nonetheless.

CBS wants absolute proof the memos are forged before they will admit it--but does CBS have proof the memos are real? If CBS asserts that the memos are real without having proof, isn't that... spreading rumors?

====================================================

That is more important than turning on your comrades, getting them tortured, illegally negotiating with the enemy in France, and discussing whether to assassinate U.S. Senators? Is that what Rather is saying?

What does he mean Speaker of the House? Barnes claimed to be Lt. Gov. at the time. Rather is slyly changing that.

"When the time comes for Rather to retire, people will remember him mainly for his involvement in a clumsy effort to sabotage a sitting President."

Yes, exactly, the justice due him, just as Clinton, no matter what happens, will always be remembered for Monica. I consider it divine justice that after having spent their whole lives in disingenuous efforts to cultivate a vain public persona, they will ultimately be remembered for some petty purile criminal behavior. For people with huge egos this kind of 'legacy' is their worst possible nightmare.
