Maytag. Mitsubishi.
Two strikingly different situations, with all too similar results: Hundreds of central Illinois manufacturing workers face unemployment by week's end.
In all, about 2,000 workers - 1,200 from Mitsubishi Motors North America plant in Normal and 800 at Maytag's Galesburg refrigeration plant - are expected to be furloughed between Wednesday and Sept. 24.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I see that you still don't have a life.... ;-)
Good thing IL isn't a swing state.
Where econmically challenged corporations are contemplating
cutbacks, AND the corp is run by Kerry contributors, we
can expect layoffs and closings to be accelerated so that
they happen in Sept and Oct.
That may or may not be the case here, but we need to keep
the tactic in mind.
After many years of being a Maytag fan, I'm now finding that their products are crap. I've had more trouble with my TWO Maytag washers/dryers than I ever had with the Kenmore machines.
Let 'em die.

Little "Willie" lives to tweak us with his famous "layoff" type posts. Ever since Patty B lost his Presidential bid, little "Willie" has been on a personal crusade to bring down Bush. Sad really.
You must've purchased some of their imported products.
Tough beans for you.
Thanks for proving my point. As I said before, let 'em die.
Ditto. My hubby & I bought a Maytag washer/dryer 6 yrs ago. We've had to have Sears come out about 5-6 times. Just this past week we received notice to be a part of a class-action lawsuit against Maytag for the Neptune line (pre 2004). Every single thing listed on the lawsuit was something we've had to have fixed. We will only buy Kenmores from now on.
Actually, it may be.
Most of these jobs are being lost because of the Illinois Democrats anti business policies, and people are starting to figure that out
All the surrounding states have a net gain in jobs, but Illinois just keeps losing them
Don't be an economic girlie-man, Willie.
Willie, your pi$$in off the crowd. I suggest you start posting happy happy articles.

Were these Maytag Neptunes or run-of-the-mill?
BTW it looks like Whirlpool is eating Maytag's lunch.
Len Hadley 'bet the farm' on a brief flurry of high-end
products during the dot-bomb boom, and they forgot to
maintain market share in the bread-and-butter lines.
Now it's biting them in the ass.
NO! I want nothing to do with those Neptunes. These are the stacked washer/dryer combos. The computerized control panels burn out and cost $160 to replace. They also stall out frequently. Crappy (& expensive!) machines.
I am an Illinois resident. I don't blame the President for him. This is the Democratic leadership in the state of Illinois which is hostile to businesses. They tax them and us to death. Let's put the blame squarely where it should be-in Democratic Governor Blogjiavech's lap.
There are also side-by-side Neptunes. I have a set.
I remember something my 7th grade teacher told us back in the early 1970's. She said that we were in the middle of transitioning from a manufacturing economy to a service economy (and we WERE at that time), and that education was more important than ever before. We needed to learn skills that would provide us with the kind of jobs that couldn't be co-opted by cheap uneducated (i.e. foreign) replacement workers, or that couldn't be performed by some kind of computer. I knew what she meant then, and it scared me. I grew up in a town where three-quarters of the workforce was employed by either the heavy machinery factory or the paper mill. Both industries had left town by the time I graduated from high school.
US companies are offshoring knowledge jobs, many held by people with post graduate college education, as fast as they can.
you better call your teacher and ask her what we all should do next.
You lie not. I'm personally acquainted with people in Mitsubishi Motors who said the lawsuit threat for petty charges of sexual discrimination and the like would eventually drive the company south like the rest of the Japanese auto manufacturers. We're not talking about real sexual harassment like promotions for sex or even implied threats, we're talking about locker-room talk between employees that makes somebody uncomfortable.
