Police say this cruiser caught fire when a round fired from an assault rifle struck a gas line.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Police say a gunman with an assault rifle opened fire on a Miami-Dade County police officer around 2 a.m. Sunday, striking her twice and setting her cruiser ablaze.

The officer is expected to be OK. It's not known how many rounds the gunman fired, but one of them hit the police cruiser's gas line, setting it on fire. Police are looking for the gunman. They say they know his name, but are not releasing it to the public.

"Somebody that's going to fire on a uniformed officer in a police car with an assault-type weapon, that person's obviously showing very disregard for any law enforcment or any authority," said Pete Andrew of the Miami-Dade County Police Department.

The officer was in the area of Northwest 183rd Street and Miami Avenue in Miami Gardens when she pulled over the suspect. Police say the suspect got out of the car and opened fire.

The AWB didn't stop this criminal, but an alert citizen armed with an "assault weapon" might have. Could the mystery shooter be Josh Sugarman of the Brady Bunch?

Wow, assault weapons are so bad that just the prospect of the ban expiring has resulted in a shooting.

Getting in the "assault weapon" phrase, I see.

Apparently they have forensic evidence that the weapon had a bayonet lug.

Not exactly. They're calling it an "assault rifle", and a "assault-type weapon".

Not possible. The ban doesn't sunset for another 8 hours. I mean, the law made it impossible for criminals to get "assault weapons," right?

What was the weapon? A flintlock with a bayonet lug would fit the assault weapon description.

I wonder why they are with-holding the name of the
suspect? Is it JohnFeryy?

Did NBC rig the car first?
The odds of a bullet igniting a gas tank are about three million to one.

Back when I was involved in small arms ballistics testing (for the govt.) we tried to do precisely that, and even explosive tipped bullets and tracers wouldnt do it with any degree of reliability. ( Eventually we developed a shotgun round that worked....about half the time)..

Methinks some anti-gun conspiracy is at work here.

Alex Pinellas, miami-dad mayor, MAGICALLY had a similar issue pop up during one of his election efforts. Interesting such a story would MAGICALLY appear again.

Not as spectacular as I expected, but being the tinfoil hatter that I am, This is probably just shoe #1.

Monday morning massacre? Who knows, I just don't see the AWB ending without a "Bang".

Might this have been drug/gang related? Mayor Pinelas has done a really poopy job containing the drug dealers.

I had the same thought. The Discovery Channel's "Myth Busters" did the same test. They fired quite a few rounds piercing a car's gas tank with no effect.

Aww, heck, who released this story a day early? It wasn't supposed to go live until after the ban expired. Move along, everyone, nothing to see here. At least not until tomorrow.

Any takers as to if this goes national at the stroke of midnight?
