I worked at the pentagon in 1972 & 1973 in the communications center. I had a selectric at the time with a special print head made to use with the first optical scanner for reading information. Just to set the record straight.

Cool.

Was that the one with the optical scanner that worked out the portional spacing between characters just typed and the ones that were about to be typed?

No, but I can tell you that at the time they had just worked out the bugs so that the massive amount of crap the pentagon sent and all of the associated agencies could use a set format and have messages scanned, checked for security then sent by computer without having to put everything on I.B.M. punch cards or on tickertape. Also using the cmputer you could edit.
