The images will periodically update.
Its a real monster of a storm. Damn.
6th strongest storm in atlantic basin history.
still strengthening per latest recon and satellite imagery.
wobble west may save grand cayman from terrible damage.
forecast for gulf of mexico still calls for weakening as upper level winds become unfavorable. cat2/cat3 at landfall in panhandle.
We need to figure out how to stop hurricanes from getting that huge and dangerous, but I suppose Algore will say we're tampering with Mother Earth.
Hopefully the westerly winds will beat the shit out of it and it will become a tropical storm. But I aint holdin my breath.
Poor, poor Florida . . . and the other states/islands of course
Also looks like there are more storms brewing in the open sea.
Maybe spraying some chamomile into the atmosphere will calm it down. Let's try some St. Johns Wort too.
.
You would need to green up the Sahara desert....according to something I heard on the Weather Channel, it has a very large part in the formation of the Tropical waves and their rotation off the east coast of Africa...
If anything I suspect that if the Sahara didn't exist there would be MORE tropical activity in the Atlantic, rivaling the number of Typhoons in the Western Pacific; dry Saharan air plays a big role in stopping a lot of waves from developing, and has wiped out several hurricanes.
The reason there wasn't any tropical activity this year in July was due to a huge amount of SAL (Saharan Air Layer, bone dry dusty air) covering much of the Atlantic; there were quite a few nicely organized waves that never developed.
You are exactly correct. While watching a newscast on Charlie, I thought 'why not tow some icebergs into the path to cool down the water?'. So I went to the National Weather Service website. Under their FAQ section, this topic is covered. They posted two reasons why it's not going to happen. First, the area necessary to cool is too large. Second, it would disturb ocean life. They state, "the hurricane is going to cause a lot of problems on its own, we don't need to add to it." Or something like that.
They're probably right, but we could try it once just to see if it helps slow down a monster like Ivan.
I think salting the Atlantic clouds with Floridian "chads" might do the trick.............
FYI
We have daily threads for IVAN, almost 350 posts now for today.

Haven't you heard about the guy who plans to fly a 747 into Ivan and dump a lot of absorbent powder into it? no joke
So if we nuked the rest of the Arab world, the air would get even drier and lead to even few hurricanes?
Now that's an idea!
Didn't know that....thanks.
Still think it may take a hard right near the Keys or skim closer to the west coast of Fl., although I am not a NOAA type person. Just my thoughts. But it's hugh and series.
