NEW YORK Three years later, they remain open questions, and many people wonder if firm answers would lead to more pain or less, to practical lessons for society or to simply a spectacle for the morbidly curious. . How many people jumped from the upper floors of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11? . Why did so many more people jump from the north tower than the south? . What floors did they come from? . Who were they? . The attack on the World Trade Center was one of the most observed catastrophes in history, and those who fell or dropped from the towers were, briefly, its most public victims. They emerged one or two at a time from a blanket of smoke and fire that rendered mass death virtually invisible. Nearly all the others killed that day - whether high in the towers, on board the hijacked airplanes or deep inside the Pentagon - were beyond the sight of survivors and witnesses. Those who came through the windows of the towers provided the starkest, most harrowing evidence of the desperate conditions inside.

I'll say this about it. I've been burned pretty bad a couple of times in my life. If I had to make the choice between burning alive and jumping, I'd jump.
Just wonderful. Maybe next they will permit celebrations of the installations of ovens at Auschwitz.
You are right about the heat; I hope it's O.K. to post these excerpts; very lengthy article but important.
"The researchers are not trying to track individual identities, but to gauge the strength and speed of the fires. The number, location and time that people jumped could provide important clues to where the heat had grown particularly intense, according to Glenn Corbett, a professor of fire science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York."
"Some commentators later remarked that those who had fallen had made a brave final decision to take control of how they would perish. Researchers say many people had no choice. Witness accounts suggest that some people were blown out. Others fell in the crush at the windows as they struggled for air. Still others simply recoiled, reflexively, from the intense heat."
"Temperatures in pockets of the buildings rose to more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or 538 Celsius, sufficient to weaken steel, according to researchers. The first people jumped or fell from the upper floors of the north tower just minutes after the impact of American Airlines Flight 11. The heat reached people on the upper floors long before the flames. Some of those trapped reported that the floor itself had grown so hot they had to stand on their desks, according to a fire official."
.
"The heat was absolutely phenomenal," said Guylene Proulx, who studies human behavior in fires for the National Research Council of Canada. "It was impossible to think you might survive. Why suffer a minute longer when it is so unbearable? It may have appeared to be the best thing to stop the pain, when the window is shattered and the opening is there."
I have always had a camera with me at work. I've applauded and sent money to candidates who have aired images of dismembered fetuses to show the face of abortion. Had I been at the WTC that day and escaped, you can bet there would be SOME pictures out there for all to see.
On a totally separate subject, does anyone know of DVD sets of the 2001 mass murder that collects images of the event and subsequent rescue and cleanup activities, as well as the reaction of the tens of thousands of people in New York at the time? Also the Pentagon part of the day and the heroes who crashed in Pennsylvania?
I'm with you on that. I would rather any other death than being burned. I don't consider what happened that day suicide.
So far the only image of a dead body that I have seen from 9-11-2001 appeared in the French edition of Photo Magazine. The body was in a body bag (which I cannot recall if it was fully zipped or not). The American edition of Photo that month also covered the 9-11 attacks. Both magazines always maintain completely different content. The US version contained no images that even approached the stark reality of that one.
Even images of the bodies falling are suppressed these days.
The most moving image to me is the cover of newsweek that show the horror in the faces of the people of New York witnessing the tradgedy.
Thank God Bush was President! This is no time for Michael Moore types nor sensitive wars on terror.
It certainly wasn't. Those poor people were doomed to die. It was just a matter of personal choice to burn or jump.
Does anyone have those pictures of the people jumping? Please post them if you do. Thanks.
A good friend of mine who lives on Pearl St., a few blocks from the Towers said the biggest mistake he ever made in his life was looking through binoculars...seeing their faces.
To Hell with Osama and his ghouls.
Whoever doesn't understand this is a truly lost soul.
As are the "rebels" who gunned down half dressed children in the backs in Beslan.
The media is covering for the Islamofascists.
Odd how that school shooting has completely different spin and less coverage than the Columbine shootings.
Why should parents be afraid of the loner kid who may steal some guns (or manufacture explosive devices) when there are terrorist cells who would make Columbine look like a stroll through the park?
Michael Moore is evil. He provides aid and comfort to America's enemies. He is as vile as Axis Sally and Lord Haw Haw were in WWII.
Diogenesis has collected some pictures of 9/11
"England is permitting a publicly advertised Islamofascist rally celebrating the 9-11 attacks."
I know people like Kerry would favor this as freedom of speech, but this is WAY over my head and beyond sane understanding.
There was a movie in the 70's, "Towering Inferno". Again, what if...
IMHO, the people who worked there always had "what if" buried in their minds. Maybe not all discussed it with their families, friends, or co-workers, but I imagine many were prepared for their fate.
Also, IMHO, the pictures should be shown, but the story itself should be left alone. If there are survivors or family members that choose to come forward, that is their perogative. Otherwise, let their very personal choices and stories alone.
I submit they put their lives in God's hands, and made the decision to do what we all will, in the end.
