We've had a lot of new folks join up recently. Welcome aboard, this thread is a gentle reminder of some basic posting guidelines. (And for some of you old timers as well) Please read the follow, and ask any questions. We will all try to help you out.

HOW TO POST AN ARTICLE

SEARCH

If it's a breaking news topic, check breaking news first, it's probably already posted.

To avoid duplicate posts, please search before posting. Use the published article title to prevent duplicates. The best method to search is to pick a key word or two from the title. If the article you are posting is, "Dan Rather Memo", start with 'Memo' for the key word. If it is a hot topic, you might want to use two or more keywords, in this case, try 'memo rather'. For an effective search, select 'match all words' and select 'order by post time'.

Search Memo

Vanities and General Interest.

General Interest (Chat)

All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. This doesn’t mean your one thought is a thread by itself. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest (Chat). Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic.

Bloggers & Personal

For all of you who have blogs or personal web sites or personal news or opinion or forum sites that you would like to discuss or promote on Free Republic, here's the place to do it.

Our new Bloggers & Personal forum is for:

Click on the "Bloggers & Personal" forum link on the Forums sidebar of the latest posts pages.

Hopefully, this will become a very popular forum for promoting and or discussing blogs and personal opinion/news/forum pages.

And lastly, please bookmark this excerpt only list, Jim updates frequently.

FYI: The New York Times is not on the excerpt list.

Wow, we've been doing this for 3 years now. How time flys.

Speak for yourself, newbie!

I've had my eye on you ever since we had that flame war on the vanity thread that got pulled for duplication. You called me a "doo doo head" and I never got the chance to respond.

Oh, don't tell me that I wasn't steaming over that one. I wish I was able to post a clever comeback, you Oscar Wilde, you. But I was denied. But I have been biding my time. Slowly, I have built a network around me. Faithful servants who will do my bidding. It won't be long and then we will pounce when you least expect it. So gird your loins, Admin Moderator.

Unless, you're the female Admin Moderator, in which case . . . uh . . . hi.

Nice weather, huh?

Just remember this, I have the nuke button...

PS, for a small contribution, I can disable the nuke button...

"We also have nicknames for each other to make things a little more personal."

I'd donate another sock to the Universe of Lost Socks to hear just a couple of those nicknames. ;)

"For example, Admin Moderator (#1), Admin Moderator (#2), etc. It gets interesting when 2 or 3 of us goof off on a thread because it just shows up as Admin Moderator."

Aha! Okay, make that two mismatched socks and one "Cat in the Hat" slipper to the Universe of Lost Socks.

Red, KC, Crash, RM ....

Crash got his name because his first day as a moderator, the first time he made a reply on our page, FR shut down for about an hour. It's stuck ever since.

ROFL! No kidding?

No offense to Crash of course, sometimes it's a matter of timing. There are some people reported to carry a certain energy field which can create interactive type electrical current exchange, causing temporary although unusual equipment malfunction. It is a rare occurrence inconsistent enough that Crash should never feel bad about it, I mean, it can't be helped and shouldn't affect the ability to zot...wait, what am I saying?? Forget what I just said, I was just kidding...no really...

That's OK. The fillings in my teeth tell me when you'll use the nuke button, just in time to duck. Oh, you might be interested in knowing that the Alien Overlords love FR. But they've been on our side for a while:

Ok, so you will allow NASCAR threads (which have nothing to do with politics or the point of this website) but then you're going to get onto newbies for posting their opinions?

????

You'll have to take that one up with Jim. He's the final say so on everything.

I have seen the exact same AP article under different titles around the world. Why is this? Are different news organizations doing this or does AP 'retitle and re-release' the same piece? This causes duplicate posts under different titles. Is there another way to cross-check this?

What I do (and I've avoided duplicates this way) is search for bits of body text on Google News. You'll find duplicates, even if the two titles are totally different verbally.

For example, looking with the phrase "Swiftboat Vets," I found a story entitled

"Swiftboat vets, Kerry supporters speak in Greenville"

After searching for the body phrase "Two men who served with John Kerry," I then found another story, entitled

"Vietnam vets back Kerry's bid"

Only one word is common to both titles (FR's search function treats "Kerry" and "Kerry's" as different), but the text that I skimmed was identical or nearly so.

This method, while not foolproof, is a start. And while there are valid reasons for changing titles, I don't care much for changing them around just for variation or whatever. :p

Oh, and thanks, moderators!

That works (and I do it often, google news is pretty good, I personally like it better than yahoo news...plus they don't have the (search-web) thing that is really annoying), only if you don't mind not being the first in breaking news. In my normal life, I post threads, and faithfully search, I've only had a couple dupes, and yes, they were pulled as duplicates. I can't have the wraith of the mods on me, so maybe I'm overly cautious... I figure, it's posted, why bother again. But, then, I'm looking at it from a mod's point of view.

What so many users don't understand is that FR started out discussing A news article, and the same thread might go on for weeks with new info being added as replies.

Over time, with new members, we've gotten away from that.

Change may be good, but the old way kept all the discussion on a news story in one place

Vanity posts were rare in those days, but every so often a classic would emerge.

This in a nutshell is the biggest long-term consequence of this forgery, bigger even than the consequences for this election.

Agreed. This election is essentially being fought between the two halves of the sixties generation -- between those who never grew up and those who did.

The radical left and its creations -- the Viet Nam Syndrome and the Mainstream Media, among others -- may all be casualties of this election.

And the country will be the better for it...

BUMP (again).

Sheesh, I've seen 3 duplicates of the same article in a 24-hour period...

You all have to notify us. There is no way 8-9 of us can spot them all. Hit abuse with the link. We can sort it out from there.
