If you check B.G. Burkett's exhaustively researched book--Stolen Valor--he says Rather dodged the Korean War by joining the National Guard. There were no college deferments then. When the war ended and Rather graduated from college he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He lasted a few weeks in boot camp before getting a medical discharge. Rather's explaination was that he had rumatic fever as a child and this enabled him to whimp out. I think he pulled an elaborate scam to end his military obligation. I spent 13 months in a Marine rifle company (C-1-5) in Vietnam but I have always respected the guardsmen. I don't resent anything George Bush did then. And Bush never called me a rapist or a murder.

Dan Rather, according to STOLEN VALOR by B.G. Burkett, joined the national guard in college to escape the Korean War. This was before college deferments. When the war ended, Rather quit the reserves by enlisting in the Marine Corps. He lasted a few weeks in boot camp before getting a medical discharge, thus ending his military obligation. Burkett's book says Rather's medical problem related to him having rumatic fever as a child. Since medical information is confidential, this explanation must have come from Rather himself.

"I still refuse to believe that Rather served in the USMC."Rather is NOT, was NOT and NEVER was a Marine...
He bombed out of BOOT CAMP and was sent home, to be a squating girlyman the rest of his life...
The Marine Corps learned of Rather's "shortcomings" and sent his sorry ass home --- BEFORE he became a Marine..
